India - ‘We sent relief on request’,
Sri Lanka - ‘India sent without even us asking for it!’
As the floods in Sri Lanka claimed 27 lives and displaced one million, New Delhi promptly dispatched a relief package to Colombo yesterday. Valued around US $1 million in total, the first 25 tonne-emergency reliefs arrived when an Indian Air Force aircraft touched down in Colombo yesterday morning.
But diplomatic sources in Colombo say that New Delhi and Colombo have momentarily forgotten of the relief operations and are intensely searching for proof of where the flood relief request originated from!
Did Sri Lanka ask for assistance? Or India volunteered on its own?
Sri Lanka President Rajapakse, addressing the press in Colombo yesterday insisted that “we appreciate India’s donation of flood relief.” He promptly added: “India came to Sri Lanka’s assistance without even a request.”
New Delhi then promptly announced that ‘it has responded to a request from the Government of Sri Lanka to send urgent relief assistance for people who have been displaced or affected due to this natural calamity.’ Complicating Colombo’s situation, New Delhi declared “..Top Minister Basil Rajapaksa thanked the Government and the people of India for rushing this assistance to Sri Lanka at such short notice”.
