India voted 7th best holiday destination

CHENNAI/BANGALORE: While preparations for the Commonwealth Games is causing severe embarrassment to the country, Brand India as a tourist destination is scaling new heights.

Globetrotters and tourists from around the world are warming up to the country's people and hospitality by voting India as the seventh-best destination in the world in the recent Conde Nast Readers' Travel Awards 2010, a head of countries like Thailand, Greece, Brazil and France. Last year, India stood at the 13th position.

According to the results, Turkey was adjudged the favourite holiday destination as people gave it top marks "for range of accommodation and that increasingly important component of any holiday: value for money", says the Conde Nast Traveller website.

Egypt, in second position, scored highest on culture, while Australia in third position was voted for having the best climate. Italy at fourth position and Spain in sixth position were voted for having great food and restaurant offerings, while New Zealand at number five scored highest on environmental friendliness.

India scored highest for the warmth of its people and hospitality with a score of 94.44 on 100. "In the first seven months of this year, inbound arrivals have gone up by about 10%. Besides, India attracts the long haul travelers who spend on an average of 15 days," said Karan Anand, head (relationship and supplier management), Cox & Kings. "New products like the Maharajas Express — the luxury train that is considered among the top ten trains in the world introduced early this year has added a new dimension to the tourism scene."

Three Indian luxury hotels were voted as the best 'Overseas Business Hotel' in the same awards. Taj West End, Bangalore, was rated the second-best overseas business hotel with an overall score of 93.22. The Leela Palace Kempinski, Bangalore, at fifth position had an overall score of 88.94 and was rated highest on having the best conference facilities. The Oberoi, New Delhi, stood tenth with an overall score of 84.81.

Good news. But we gotta do more to attract tourists. We have 10 times the potential of the #1 country, Turkey. Its our attitude and our infrastructure that lets us down. Better airports, better hotels, better connectivity and better policing can make us #1.

this is rated by Conde Nast Readers' Travel Awards 2010. Ok so this is not a worthy thread.

When Newsweek or Times Magazine rates you as 7th then we'll talk.

Well, yes....I would expect you to trust a NEWS magazine more than the world's premier TRAVEL magazine when it comes to travel and tourism news, just because it says something good about the country you love to hate.

p.s, no new Kashmir thread today?

One thing we need to promptly do to ensure a healthy growth of our tourism industry is to drastically improve our in internal security situation......terrorist incidents often give governments like Australia....a notable excuse to issue travel alerts ......also our internal Law and order situation needs a lot of upgrading .....we could make stricter laws and punishments against any harassment of foreign nationals in our country....to encourage tourists ....European tourists in particular are highly apprehensive about visiting places like Goa or Delhi .......which have some of our best tourism attractions......

i think with a bit more work, we can hit number one. India has so much to offer, and we have something for all types of tourists, whether they seek nature, medical care, culture, re;axation or adventure.

we should really clean up our cities more. a lot of my friends who have visited India complain about the untidiness of the cities. It really puts off people. Also, more police should be employed to keep areas clear of beggars who pester the tourists. Do this, and you will see India rising in that list.

India has some of the most astounding locales in the world. The biggest pain is the lack of infrastructure. Some of the roads I have seen while traveling in the North are just scary. Besides this, the hotels are either super-expensive 5 stars or run-of-the-mill rubbish. A majority of potential travelers don't want to stay in $500 / nite place. Taj's chain like Ginger is trying to change that - but we still have a longish way to go.

its impossible to understand this scenario .

for some reason even the rain in bombay smell like - cow shyt. and they rank it as 7th best holiday dest.

anyways - i think india should do better with its infrastructure plans and make it more tourist friendly nation.
