At least 35 people have been killed after consuming toxic alcohol in India's western city of Mumbai (Bombay), local police say.

They say residents of a slum in the Malad area fell ill after drinking the alcohol on Wednesday morning.

More than 20 people are being treated in hospitals, amid fears that the death toll could rise.

Toxic alcohol deaths are a regular occurrence in India, where people often drink cheap country liquor.

One suspect has been detained in the latest case.

Tayra Khan, wife of one of the victims, told the Mid-Day newspaper that her husband was admitted to hospital early on Thursday after "he complained of vomiting and pain in the stomach".

"He died three hours later, leaving me and my three little children alone."

At least 29 people were killed after consuming toxic alcohol in Uttar Pradesh state in January.

India has witnessed many other incidents of toxic alcohol deaths in the past:

• Nearly 170 people died in 2011 in the eastern state of West Bengal

• At least 30 people were killed in Uttar Pradesh in September 2009

• More than 100 people were killed in Gujarat in July 2009

Nope. Upscale is Bandra and South Mumbai areas like Malabar Hills. Regular alcohol is EXTREMELY expensive because of high excise taxes.

I'm pro taxes actually. Because of them alcohol consumption is not as rampant as it would be. Alcohol really destroys families, especially when your country is poor.

There are these construction workers next to my home now. 3 children are perpetually wandering without going to school. So got my landlord and a few of our neighbors together and approached them and said, look send your kids to school, whatever the expenses we'll pool it together and make sure they're paid. Mother flatly declined. She said- my husband blows everything he earns on drink, I need the older one here so that she can take care of the 2 extremely young ones. That way at least I can work and fend for the family. And so it goes, the tragic tale of a family that's coming apart in front of our eyes and an education denied to them despite the community trying to help them. And this is a tragedy that happens all too often.

fir your information most people here dont preffer scotch whiskey they like indian brands like royal challange, antiquity,royal stagfor cheaper brands its like offisers choice or bag pipper but as for scotch whiskey lovers blenders pride and 100 pippers or teachers are most saought after moral of the story is indian drinkers are very brand cantious but most love hard whiskey top brands though are jhonny walker black,red , green and blue label and chewas reagel

It was 35 because of the taxes - it would have been tens of thousands if not for them. Rich drinking is a different story than poor people wasting their money and ruining their family going crazy after alcohol.
