India to rethink ban on airing Pakistani television channels

Even Pakistanis are not interested in Pakistani channels (They are crazy after Indian channels and movies), then why on earth someone would think that Pakistani channels would be watched by Indians?????:undecided:

dont know where u indians get this Pakistani programes let aside prime time even i didnt see this kinda programes in day time on Pakistani channels or is tht wht ur govt feeds indians just to make you guys hate Pakistan?

There is something called internet and no..GoI doesn't directed me anywhere.

& Pakistani Govt just recently ban indian channels due to continous ban of Pakistani chnanels in india & no cable operators is now showing them cz of low popularity indian channels enjoy now a days....

Good to know then why Pakistanis are crying for their channels to be telecasted in India.

Switch the channel nobody watches him

Its about common standards the media should follow.

soo u also have ur part in anti Pakistani shows no matter religion is there or not but there is anti things than why gettings angry when Pakistan i media reply to indian propoganda?

P.S: In my view entertainment channels should be allowed for the time being. Pakistan already allowed tht as we are free to watch any thing from any country which is the essence of democracy not shouting to the whole world tht listen we ae biggest democracy where actions dont support it.

Indian propaganda dont involve...saying Inshallah ..we do ghazwa E hind......we will air from red fort..........

Indian progaganda dont involving Degrading a religous group like ahmadis

Indians dont have problems with Pak channels showing Anti-india propganda ......but know the difference between that religous bullshits....

there are plenty of such shows in pakistan were religious insults and anti hindu topics are let loose...............Unless some form of control or way to censor this can be ensured........the probelms it will create if aired in India is immense .........Imagine Zaid hamid and his usual rhetorics of Pak air in LAL qila with lot of inshallalhs airing all over india !!......Or hafiz Saeed talking about kashmir ................................these things are not tolerable even in the name of free speech.

We dont let pak terrorist air in indian show. Nor allow criminals like dawood to invest in local market.

Indian propaganda against paksitan is mainly nationalistic in nature ..........

Media is very powerful tool, it can have greatest impact on minds of people regarding important issues. Indian media is doing a great job. I hope India keep its ban on Pakistan TV Channels.

If pakistani media is same as the pakistani people here show their beautiful thinking about India and Indian people, then i think this is good to ban all channels.

as Jade said that media is very powerful tool, and people who are dependent on media for the all news and info, they can be misguided.
There should be some restriction on media, social site and internet. People always misuse of freedom of speech, and this is government duty to control this.
Whatever India, pakistan are facing now a days this is not because of government, main reason is people of these country. I think this was wrong decision to give full freedom to these people in 1947..

nyways a good article i found on TOI:

For two countries separated by a common culture and language, the idiotbox can bridge the gap. But, with both governments often taking each other's satellite channels off the air and often using the state TV for propaganda against each other, television has reinforced stereotypes — mostly in India where channels from across the border have been banned. This may all change now as the government proposes to open India to Pakistani TV channels, something that may change our perception about the neighbouring country.

Pakistan, like India, is addicted to the 'family drama.' Indian viewers would be tickled pink to see the first episode of the Pakistani serial Dil Diya Dehleez, which opens with a bunch of young women singing the Bollywood number "Mehndi laga ke rakhna."

That Star Plus is amongst Pakistan's most watched general entertainment channels may have something to do with the fact that many Pakistani serials are inspired by Indian soaps. For Indians, this is akin to watching a reflection of a reflection. "You have to understand that they (Pakistani serials) are based on the Star Plus formula but are now breaking away from it," says Kamal Siddiqi, editor of The Express Tribune, a Pakistani daily. Pakistani serials are rather bold in the issues they raise, from child abuse to divorce and even incest, he adds. Many are adaptations of Urdu novels.

Not so long ago, Pakistan, like India, was obsessed with Hindi serials of the saasbahu variety. "People wouldn't cook their meals from 7 pm to 10 pm when Hindi serials were on air," says Fazila Kazi, a popular Pakistani TV actress and producer. But much like Indians, Pakistanis too, are now growing weary of the saas-bahu formula.

Humsafar, one of Pakistan's most popular serials, revolves around the lives of Khirad, a young girl from a poor family, and her snooty rich cousin Ashar who get married, in accordance with Khirad's mother's dying wish. As the two begin to fall in love, they're torn apart by Ashar's scheming mother who plots with his childhood friend to separate the couple. While the story sounds straight out of a K-serial , the acting is more natural and a lot less dramatic than what's dished out on Indian TV. The clothes and make up are understated, and the homes look like regular middle-class houses, not the palaces that families in many Indian soaps inhabit.

Unlike the shy demure heroines in Hindi serials, Khirad is a strong woman who stands up for her rights, and though in love with Ashar, is capable of living alone. Confrontations between Khirad and her mother-in-law are not accompanied by dramatic bursts of music. "Humsafar was aired every Saturday at 8 pm. I would try and watch all the episodes. I was crazy enough to watch what I missed on YouTube. And believe me, I wasn't the only one," says Mehwish Jillani, a young mother from Karachi. She also loves watching Mera Saeen, the story of a feudal politician, and family drama Dil Diya Dehleez.

While Kazi feels the sets and costumes look beautiful in Indian serials, she finds them a tad exaggerated, with heroines wearing make-up to bed. "We want to make more realistic serials for the masses. When they see people just like themselves on screen, going through the same things they do, it helps them find a solution to their own problems," she adds.

Dareecha, a serial that Kazi acted in, debunks superstition and shows that much of what we think is magic is simply a manifestation of past guilt. Kazi, an avid viewer of the Colors channel, says the new crop of Hindi soaps is also a radical departure from saas-bahu serials.

Serials about life in the army are also hugely popular, like Alpha Bravo Charlie — a story of three young friends in the army— directed by Shoaib Mansoor of Khuda Ke Liye fame. Dhuwan, one of Pakistan's golden oldies, is about four police commandos.

"The golden era of PTV tele-serials began in Lahore in 1964 with Nazrana, the first drama aired on the channel," says Fazil Jamili, editor, internet for Pakistan's Jang group of newspapers. He says the streets wore a deserted look when popular serials of the '80s and '90s like Jangloos, Waaris and Fifty-Fifty were on air.

Pakistani serials will help Indians see a very different side of Pakistan and the issues faced by the middle class such as crime, poverty and corruption, says Siddiqi. "This would show us Pakistanis in a good light, a contrast from the guntrotting, turban-wearing weirdos that have somehow become the general perception of Pakistan," says Mehwish, who wants India to appreciate Pakistani talent in much the same way that Pakistanis love Bollywood.

KARACHI:
It may have massive public influence, but the media in Pakistan is not big business, a fact that can best be illustrated with a single statistic: all of Pakistan’s television stations combined – news, entertainment, sports et al – have less revenue than Nestle earns off just selling Milkpak.

Advertising, which forms nearly all of the revenues for television stations, and the bulk of revenues for print publications, has been growing very rapidly in Pakistan over the last decade. According to Aurora (an industry publication), total advertising spending in Pakistan was Rs32 billion in fiscal year 2011, a figure that has grown at an annualised average rate of 23% during the past ten years (inflation was just over 9% during that period).

A number of industry officials who The Express Tribune talked to attributed the phenomenal expansion in the ad spending largely to the mobile telecommunications and banking sectors, which served as its main engines of growth in the past decade.

According to Qamar Abbas Rawalpindiwala, executive director of the Pakistan Advertisers Society, a body of advertisers, which claims to represent 80% of the ad spend in Pakistan, the boom in advertising in the past decade was initially led by the banking sector. “More recently, however, telecoms have been on an advertising spree,” he said.

The telecom sector led the top 10 product categories on news and business channels in fiscal 2011, with a 29% share. Shampoos came second with a market share of 7%, which signifies how heavily the telecom sector spends on advertising compared to other product categories. However, after a huge rise in ad spending from early to mid-2000s, the overall share of banking has decreased, as it stood at just about 5% of the total ad spend in 2011.

According to Aurora, the share of television in the total ad spend was 58%, or Rs18.6 billion, in 2011. Quite expectedly, TV received the highest increase in ad spend over the preceding fiscal year among all mediums of advertising with a rise of up to 28%. The total ad spend in Pakistan increased by 18% in the same period.

Express News General Manager Sales Nusrat Ali says TV enjoys the largest share in ad spend mainly because of high cable penetration in the country. Although there are few official figures, industry sources say 70% of total households with a television set in Pakistan have access to satellite channels through the cable network.

While the share of television in the ad spend is increasing every year, figures show that the share of the print media is in decline. In 2011, it was worth Rs8.5 billion, with a 27% share in the total ad spend, a decrease of 5% over the preceding year.

“Reading a newspaper is a habit, and you can’t change it easily. So while the share of newspapers in the total ad spend is shrinking gradually, it’s not going to disappear anytime soon,” says Saad Hashmi, who works as group account head, client services, at Orient Advertising, an advertising agency. “If a quarter-page ad on the front page of a leading newspaper costs Rs1.2 million, a wise account manager can use the same amount to run a month-long ad campaign on radio. That makes print advertising a little less attractive.”

The share of radio in the total ad spend in 2011 was Rs1.3 billion, or 4%, up 22% from the preceding year.

Another noteworthy phenomenon in the ad industry of Pakistan is the surge in the outdoor and brand activation expense, which saw a 50% increase to Rs3 billion, or 9% of the total ad spend, in 2011. Ali says the major reason for the increase in “out of home” advertising is that people are tired of ‘clutter’ on television and want more engagement and personal interaction through brand activation events. Secondly, he adds, power breakdowns have made out-of-home advertising more reliable for advertisers.

Rawalpindiwala says the ad industry will keep growing at a significant pace in coming years. “Although final figures are yet to come out, the size of Pakistan’s ad industry for fiscal 2012 is expected to be between Rs37 billion and Rs40 billion.”

Pakistan should ban indian channels too.

Yeah right......
"Mushrooming growth of channels, devaluation of the rupee, and rising costs of fuel and equipment have thrown most of the channels into deep financial crisis," said Ilyas Shakir, CEO and founder of Dhoom, a Karachi-based Urdu channel.
You're right. Profit share for some channels are high "as compared to" other channels. Over all you are in a deep (you know)
