India’s workhorse to launch three satellites for China | Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (Isro’s) workhorse launch vehicle Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which put into orbit some of India’s most important satellites such as the Chandrayaan-1 and Mars Orbiter Mission, has been chosen to launch the three DMC-3 Earth observation satellites for China.

The DMC-3 will be built by UK’s Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSLT) and its imaging capacity will be leased to Beijing-based Twenty First Century Aerospace Technology Company Limited (21AT) for a period of seven years.

As per an agreement singed between UK and China in 2011, 21AT will lease 100% of the imaging capacity of the three satellites.

According to SSLT, the satellites provides unparalleled one metre high resolution imagery with high speed downlink and 45 degree off-pointing.

“The three satellites will form a new constellation, DMC-3, with daily revisit times, which is crucial for change detection, disaster monitoring and response planning, and essential for acquiring cloud-free imagery,” states SSLT on the DMC-3 mission.

Further, the satellite design features advanced avionics and optical systems that make it possible to perform several different types of imaging such as mapping terrain, strip imaging and mosaic imaging for wide areas.

On January 29, Isro’s commercial arm Antrix Corporation Limited and DMC International Imaging, wholly-owned subsidiary of SSLT, inked an agreement of launching three DMC-3 Earth observation satellites.
The space agency said it has planned to launch the 350kg DMC-3 by the yearend or early 2015 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

.
The title is somewhat misleading, those are not Chinese satellites, so India is not launching for China.....

Read carefully this part:

"The DMC-3 will be built by UK’s Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSLT) and its imaging capacity will be leased to Beijing-based Twenty First Century Aerospace Technology Company Limited (21AT) for a period of seven years."

The Chinese company is leasing the images from DMC-3's owner, SSLT of UK. In simpler words, India is launching three satellites for a UK company, not for China.

Why didn't the chinese firm insist on a chinese launch vehicle ?

UK company probably decides launch vehicle. Should be one of ESA's rockets if you ask me, but they have a backlog of iirc 3 years of booked launches.

Vega is too small for this IMHO. Plus its a private company. Costs matter and Indian costs are looooow.

.
If UK is manufacturing it, and India is launching, w-t-f are chinese doing ? Just leasing it

UK company is in business of providing satellite services. They decide on the best launcher in regards to availability and price and provide service to whoever wants it. In this case, Chinese.

The Chinese company is probably "private" (but not PLA-would be a fiasco if they needed commercial images) and will use images commercially on Chinese market.

Erm....SST are renowned for small satellites. I doubt these ones are too big for Vega and even if they are, there's other rockets.

Costs play a role indeed, but i suspect this played some part too:

order book currently has contracts with 35 different customers, equal to more than three years of business

Oh Plz dont tell this secret as then 90% of products made in China ( Designed in US ) will become more of "Made in US" , which Isnt the case.

Also its NOT the Chinese Company. Do check this : China and UK strike space deal - BBC News

It States :

Approval for the deal has come from the highest levels in government in both London and Beijing, and the satellite data package was actually part of the £1.4bn of trade agreements signed between premiers David Cameron and Wen Jiabao during their summit on Monday.

Both administrations gave their consent after being re-assured that no technology transfer rules were being broken.
