India will do what they deem to be right for their own national interest. Like any other state would.
To India, bowing completely to the American pressure will prove much worse than would writing off Iran as a major Hydrocarbon supplier.
In fact, when the insurance companies from the West started flooding in to the Indian market, this situation was one of the biggest concerns raised by the opposition.
While in this world no country is completely independent, Indians have some experience in walking the fine line. In fact, Iran is the main supplier that India can always rely on whenever tensions arise (and they do - very frequently) between India and the West/Saudis. So I doubt this will become a major stumbling block between India-Iran hydrocarbon trade.
We had seen a very similar situation arising at the WTO, when relations between China and India were going very rocky, and yet they both joined hands to block the inclusion of conditions that the US and rest of the West tried hard to push in.
