IM sure most Indians watch Satmev jayete...there was something about the cost escalations with the branded drugs...and the production costs were not even 1/10 of the actual price.

You got it all wrong. Generic drugs are not copied drugs or manufactured without patents. These are drugs which are manufactured when the patent of the branded drugs expires.

When a generic drug can be produced

When a pharmaceutical company first markets a drug, it is usually under a patent that, until it expires, allows only the pharmaceutical company that developed the drug (or its licensees) to sell it. Generic drugs can be produced without patent infringement for drugs where: 1) the patent has expired, 2) the generic company certifies the brand company's patents are either invalid, unenforceable or will not be infringed, 3) for drugs which have never held patents, or 4) in countries where the drug does not have current patent protection. Patent lifetime differs from country to country; typically an expired patent cannot be renewed. In the U.S., patent extensions may be granted if changes are made; some pharmaceutical companies have sought extensions on things as minor as changes to the shape and color of the pill; generic makers are excluded while the adjudication of the extension is considered. A new version of the drug with significant changes to the compound could be patented, but this requires new clinical trials. In addition, a patent on a changed compound does not prevent sales of the generic versions of the original drug unless regulators take the original drug off the market, as happened in the case of terfenadine.

This allows the company to recoup the cost of developing that particular drug. After the patent on a drug expires, any pharmaceutical company can manufacture and sell it; only manufacturing cost will be incurred, which is a small fraction of the cost of original testing and development of the drug.

lol ..I don't know why people here are claiming Indian healthcare to be at par with the best .....
Having worked in both systems ...........I can tell that we are still around 30 years behind west as far as Infrastructure is concerned and like wise around 10 years behind in following new recommendations and Treatment guidelines .....

You can only compare say PGI and AIIMS are good enough as West as far as treatment protocols are concerned .but thats just two Institutes.....but on Infrastructure wise even they are pretty poor......

a vast majority of poor and illiterate people die because of this .......

Hospitals like Max fortis and say escorts which are actually good enough are only available for people who are ultra rich ....even middle class cannot afford them .....

My uncle has a pharma manufacturing unit...
And one of the "tablet" which is manufactured in his factory retails at 1.80Rs in the local market...
Can you imagine what is its manufacturing cost??!!
A mind numbing 8 paise..!!! Thats 0.08 Rupee..!!!

And the installed capacity is about 1,000,000 tablets a month...!!! FTW..!!

Rs 27,000 crore project for free medicines to start this year

NEW DELHI: In an ambitious project, government proposes to provide free medicines to millions of people through a Rs 27,000 crore joint initiative of the Centre and states within this year.

Under the plan, free generic drugs would be given at the public health facilities in states, according to a Health Ministry official.

The generics are off-patent medicines which cost much less than the patented drugs. Most of the commonly used drugs are generics in nature.

"This year, a new and ambitious initiative has been proposed for supply of free generic drugs in the public health facilities in the states," the official said, adding that it would help in expanding access to medicines.

The proposal which is a part of the 12th Plan involves Rs 20,000 crore outlay from the Centre and about Rs 7,000 crore from the states.

The Indian pharma industry has hailed the move saying, "any attempt by the government to provide medicines free of cost to the weaker sections of society is always welcome. We will support this initiative by the government," said D G Shah, secretary general of the Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA).

It would also be a boost for the Rs 1.10 lakh crore domestic industry which thrives on generic drugs, not only in India but also in the export market.

"The Government has been sanctioning funds under various programmes, including the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Last year a special initiative was undertaken to provide free drugs to women for deliveries in public hospitals and infants," the Health Ministry official said.

Even India's best government hospitals are nowhere near compared to western hospitals ..

And private multi speciality hospitals charge so much that middle class people savings might disappear
For e.g. The operation like hysterectomy cost at most 18k in my hospital but in these multi speciality hospitals could be more than 2 Lakhs
