India to give free medicine to hundreds of millions

which can make sense of endless night outs in their 10 years of study ( MBBS + specialization ).

Thats highly subjective. A doctor, a MD, near my house gave up his high profile practice and started his own clinic and charges just RS 70/- for his consultation..thats just 1/4th of what specialists charge in my place. He is happy with that amount, but that doesn't mean every other doctor should be . So a definite amount as salary quoted by the doctors will help in Govt recruiting them without any hassle.

Yeah it is subjective but u can always derive the correlation from the stats. In simple terms, please do check what are his other batch mates doing ? How much do they charge on an average ?

As I said before, the doctors should quote their salary to the Govt through their associations and through negotiations a middle ground can be reached..this will avoid unnecessary squabbles with the Govt on pay.

Anyways from the 'We the People' program on NDTV, I found out that the Govt pays 98 lakhs to educate one doctor at AIIMS.

AIIMS budget is around 900 crores. But mostly it is spent on giving subsidized meds and surgeries for the poor people. Also the doctors there are not sitting ideally and playing cards. They provide their services in house in 5th year and 1 year rural service also..

Is it enough to pay back the 98 lakhs..I don't think so.

Dude, I didn't said anything about subsidy..just want to say that the doctors who refuse to serve in Govt hospitals just think about the amount of investment that the Govt made on him.Just take some pity at the poor patients and atleast serve for 5 years or so in a Govt hospital and he can be on his way and rake in lakhs. In Kerala the salary of Govt doctors is as follows:

Assistant Surgeons =Rs.35,340
Civil Surgeon grade =Rs.52,874
Deputy Director=Rs.63,042 .

Is the above a good salary for atleast serving 5 years of their lives in Govt hospitals.

My bro in maulana Azad as a junior assistant ( MD first year ) used to get around 45K. SO a surgeon should get more than 52k and a deputy director still more..

Do u know how much a cabinet level secretary earns ? Or those lackadaisical MP earns ?

It depends from state to state

I have heard this question many times, even in our regional media and I feel that atleast some of the doctors have a superiority complex and looks down on other graduates. If you are not aware the young doctors in Pakistani Punjab is on strike. I happen to see one of the discussions on their media and the doctor in the panel abused the bureaucrat by saying that 'We are not BA pass like you".

Comparison should be made to the basis of paygrades of other equivalent govt sectors. As for comparing with politicians, the President is paid above 1 lakhs per month. Should doctors be payed more than that.

Anyways if we see that NDTV debate, many guests are of the opinion that subsidy for any education should be stopped by the Govt and instead scholarships for deserving candidates should be given out. I think thats the correct way as Govt will be spared from spending huge sums on education and rather that amount could be used for paying the high salary demanded by doctors.

That money includes free treatment given to patients ..

And every country does that , India is not the only one
Every government college whether it's engineering or MBAs have subsidied education
Medical colleges are not the only one subsidised

Of course it is..just saying that the doctors just take some pity on the poor patients in the Govt hospitals and spend some 5 years or so in Govt hospitals (with salary starting at Rs 35,000 in Kerala) before moving on to rake in millions.

Actually if u stop giving subsidies and rather give scholarships the govt will loose all ground to ask any doctor for rural services :woot:

Scholarships to deserving candidates and not all.

Anyways I said in my earlier post that if it was me I will use a part of that 5.4 billion fund , may be 1 billion, and use that to start medical colleges especially in the tribal belts and places where infant mortality is highest and saturate the market with doctors.

Although it is a noble idea but it would take atleast 10 years before it may bear fruits :(

ontopic : Doctors need to be payed more not because of their brains but simply because they are low in numbers..

No pain..no gain. We waited 64 years, we can wait for 10 years more.

The solution is to increase their numbers as proposed by me. More medical colleges= More doctors. Is there is any other way.

Yes, solution is in numbers.. nurture so many docs that they end up like IT workers :P

Yes of course....whats wrong with having more doctors. We have only on doctor for every 2000 people while WHO recommends 1 doctor for every 1000 people. So we have to double the total number of doctors and if possible more than that taking into account the Indian doctors migrating to foreign countries.

I heard China successfully increased the health care in rural areas by training rural doctors (its somewhat like a diploma Engineer). India should also look into that, if find viable adopt it in India.
