Pakistan said India to maintain its illegal hold on Jammu and Kashmir suppresses Kashmiri Muslims and holds sham elections at gun-point.

“To maintain its illegal hold on that disputed territory, India has deployed over 700,000 of its forces, atrociously tries to suppress majority voice of Kashmiri Muslims and holds sham elections at gun-point,” Foriegn Office spokesperson Qazi Khalilullah said on Wednesday, while addressing India slamming Pakistan holding elections in Gilgit-Baltistan..

“The dispute stems from India’s constant refusal to implement the relevant Security Council Resolutions, which provide for a just solution of the Kashmir issue,” he added.

The Foreign Office spokesperson rejected India’s statement claiming the entire Jammu and Kashmir, including Gilgit and Baltistan, are an integral part of India, saying the country is unlawfully occupying territories in the region.

“Kashmir is an internationally recognised dispute, pending final settlement through a free and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices, as enshrined in numerous UN Resolutions,” Khalillah said.

“Under these resolutions no material change is allowed, yet India, in complete violation of these resolutions, calls it a state of the union,” he added.

Addressing India slamming Gilgit-Baltistan polls held on June 8, the Foreign Office spokesperson termed it an “interference in the internal affairs of Pakistan.”

India said the G-B elections were “an attempt by Pakistan to camouflage its forcible and illegal occupation of the regions.”

However, Khalilullah responded, “It is actually India which is unlawfully occupying the territories of Jammu and Kashmir.”

Blah blah UN resolution blah plebiscite this plebiscite that etc etc. Who really cares nowadays about UN resolutions dating back 50 years ? . Look at the videos of Kashmir issue being debated in UN General Assembly, you see half the delegates yawning.

Some things never change. In 1957, they were complaining about "sham elections" in Indian Kashmir, when they had never held any election, sham or otherwise, in their territory. Here is what our then ambassador to the UN, VK Krishna Menon, quipped in the UN Security Council :

Why is that we have never heard voices in connection with the freedom of people under the suppression and tyranny of Pakistani authorities on the other side of the cease-fire line? Why is it that we have not heard here that in ten years these people have not seen a ballot paper? With what voice can either the Security Council or anyone coming before it demand a plebiscite for a people on our side who exercise franchise, who have freedom of speech, who function under a hundred local bodies?

That is the beauty. I don't want Pakistan to change.
They are perfect the way they are.

If they change they might actually make things better for themselves. But as long as they remain the way they are - they will not be a threat to India, just a nuisance.

It is India who commented on elections being held in GB and the FO's remarks are a rebuttal to that. It is India who yet again is poking its nose in other countries' internal affairs.

India did not call the elections a sham. (Even if we did, we would have more credibility to say something like that, given that all our elections are held at world standards, and satisfies all international observers, unlike Pakistani elections which are a joke not taken seriously even by Pakistani politicians.)

India's statement was due to the fact that India considers G-B to be Indian territory, just as Pakistan considers J-K to be Pakistani. Hence India's statement, that Pakistan has no legitimacy to conduct elections in Indian territory. (You can disagree with it being Indian territory, of course. But that's the position from which that statement was made.)

In my personal opinion, India should not make such statements, unless India is willing to do something about it's claimed ownership. Same goes for Pakistan.

But calling India's elections a sham is a big sham - elections at every level in J-K are completely free and fair, and they have as much political representation andd participation as any other state. More, if poll numbers are looked at. The local, district and municipal level, as well as state level govt is comprised of Kashmiris voted in by fellow Kashmiris. And J-K also sends representatives to the central govt, like any other state does.

Other that the infamous stolen election in the early 80s, elections in J-K have been as transparent as possible.

Pakistan will soon get a lesson or two in democracy from India. The Election Commission ( EC) is all set to send a team of experts to the country to demonstrate the use of electronic voting machines ( EVMs) .

First, pls try to be a lil concise. Second, I will have trouble taking your opinion seriously if you believe that things could be perfect. Nothing in this world is black and white, rather it is different shades of gray. The more you go around, the more you notice that.
