New Delhi, Nov 19 (PTI)

New Delhi issued a strong demarche to Iran's Charge De Affairs Reza Alaei expressing its "deep disappointment" over the remarks, which is seen here as "impingement of territorial integrity and sovereignty".

In an apparent tit-for-tat, India, for the first time, abstained late last night from voting on the UN resolution on the human rights violations in Iran. In past, India has always voted against the resolution.

Noting that it was a matter of "serious concern", the sources said these comments have also factored India's decision to abstain from voting on the UN resolution, which was piloted by Canada and several other countries.

In an official reaction, Ministry of External Affairs said "our decision on the vote was made after due deliberation." while 80 countries voted in favour of the resolution, 44 voted against it and 57 countries abstained.

Sources were also quick to point out that even in many Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) countries, there has been no consensus on the resolution and Saudi Arabia in past has voted in favour of the resolution.

Since July this year, Iran has on three occasions remarked supporting the "struggle" in Kashmir and bracketed the situation in the state with that in Gaza and Afghanistan, sources said.

. .
indian decission to abstain from voting on the UN resolution comes after recent remarks made by Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei addressing Hajj pilgrims in Tehran,...

also Earlier in October, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman condemned Indian action against protesters in Jammu and Kashmir who were provoked by clippings of alleged desecration of the Koran in the US.

Iran, you just lost one close ally. Iran should understand the implication for mixing politics with religion. Good for us. Indo-Isreal close tie up will help India more than India-Iran relationship.

disagreed. how would Iran loose India as a close ally ?? the closing of ties with Iran on this basis, will highlight the kashmir more in the international arena. I am expecting iran to act on it or come up with an answer soon..am sure it would hate to loose india as an ally at this moment atleast.

Its all due to US puppet manmohan singh. MMS is causing us dear. From all types of corruption to Myanmar and Iran are falling for chinese trap just because of MMS.

We should sign Iran-India Under sea gas pipeline agreement.

And ask USA to stay away from our relations with others also its not in USA's interest as china will benefit from it.

do you have any shame or not ?

I am all for Indo-Iran friendship but the Iranians are taking us for granted now . they have spoken against India on kashmir many times now .

We have to start acting like a tough power and let them know ,its not on.

Friendship can not be one sided.

If she congressis take action you call them weak , if they dont , then also you call them weak . What the hell do you want ?

You want us to lick iran's feet ?

Its not about US or israel , the fact is if Iran really cared about relations with India they would have not been so insensitive about Indian concerns on Kashmir.

They dont think we are important as friends that is why we are seeing this attitude.

we have got to start acting tough and shed this image of a soft power with all countries including the US.

good decision by congress.

If they dont need us , we sure as hell don't need them

Good move by GOI.... I hope they are just giving nice options to india on international level on certian matters...this time india abstained from voting i hope next time we will vote against iran....;)

I don't agree. There might be some differences but India-Iran relationship can still be salvaged.

It's not too late yet.

Actually not, friend. The state of Jammu & Kashmir's concerns are totally an Indian matter and whether it is Sunnis or Shias in the state, they are like any other non-Muslim Kashmiris also who're equally having a right from the state which makes it an "Indian" concern. The people there are answerable to our constitution and our government. Separatists are a different irritation of foreign meddling but that is not to be confused here.

Iran is welcome to help but if it cannot help, it shouldn't also go about ruining our ties with them just to score points in Muslim world (not that it would affect us in any way but still).

When we voted against them in IAEA, India had made it very clear that we do not welcome another nuclear weapons state in the region and hence vote was against nuclear weapons. Post the voting, Indian External Affairs had clearly said that India was not against Iran's civilian nuclear energy and Iran understood this.

Iran moving further away from India is a big bonus for China.

Sooner or later, China will have transit agreements for energy resources to pass through Pakistan into China.......something which India is in desparate need to for its energy consumption appetite. With a growing economy this hunger will just grow further.

China will take full advantage of this and rightfully so.....

Indian War Crimes in Kashmir should not go unheard or unpunished.........Iran should speak up as it has done already....

In the coming years, the train transit from Pakistan, Iran to Turkey will be up and running.........China is already interested in this train line to come up north into China and India too has offered its interest......not so any more if Iran doesn't agree.............

Things work both ways and Iran too has many cards to play undermining Indian influence from spreading West of its borders...........

Guys calm down.

International relations or politics or diplomasy should not mixed with emotions.

We don't need to react in a way that harm our interests and help our enemies.

Be it pakistan for decades or now a radical leader of a sect everyone will talk :blah::blah: or harm us till the time we don't make it loud and clear that every action of their will attract a brutal and punishing severe reply.

But tell me do we have any leader like Indira Gandhi or do you think MMS have such capacities????????

You are mixing two separate spheres of global dynamics here; trade and military conflict. Never mix the two as it would cloud your analytical thinking. The grapple for resources is totally a trade aspect. Iran knows what it can get from us is an additional revenues apart from what it can earn from China and Pakistan and other countries.

Any additional revenue in trade is always welcome.

Military and foreign affairs is totally different. Again, the Government of Iran doesn't have this as a formal policy against us. It is one leader who mentioned something in his speech.

Both Iran and India, need each other. As the cookie has crumbled, it seems India needs it more even though the Govt might think otherwise but access to Afghanistan and Energy security are too big issues to be bartered away by some Obama talk which might deliver nothing.

Since when was India a close ally of Iran?
