India starts work on second indigenous aircraft carrier

I agree with you read this line Navy sources expressed hope that by the time the IAC-II would be ready, the indigenously-built Naval Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) would also be fully mature for operating on it.

I think N-LCA will not be in CATOBAR configuration. IAC II may be SATOBAR, may be like Kuzetsnov Class Carrier.... Something like this

I too was interested in this part but I think we'll just have to wait and see- the Indian MoD/military are masters of misinformation.

Another white elephant - nice. Wonder whose pockets are being lined up these days with these obviously substandard ships. Ship making is not your core competency as a nation - if you want a carrier - commission it from the Russians, British, French or the Americans. God knows they need the jobs. They also have the requisite expertise and certainly know how to meet deadlines. But then - those scams only involve kickbacks - this will produce a ship which might never set sail.

Please explain how these ships are so "obviously" substandard.

First make IAC-1 on time then think about IAC-2..
n

thinking about IAC-2 when IAC-1 is being built is to ensure IAC-2 gets completed on time! First of its kind project always takes more time than the similar kind of second project...Also, by parallally running two similar projects, we can increase the reusablity, reduce the cost and project duriation..

.
Are you suggesting that Indian ship building technique is in the same league as Western nations?

In quality Indian shipyards are in the same league, it is productivity where Western nations are superior to Indian shipyards.

So if we dont build ships thinking it will be substandard, how will we get into the league of Western Nations ?

AFAIK, the western nations went through the same learning curve that we are going through right now -- Raptor or PAKFA were not built in a day.

Running parallel projects can also have negative effects specially for someone who is doing it for the first time, the common problems include resource constraints and adding complexities

The IAC-1 is not still operational, on paper you can say that much of the work has done but until the ACC is not set to sail and testing you cant be assure of whether all chunks are working as planned and the output of the system as a whole is what was desired , That can help you to notice and get into mind even the minor of things that went wrong thus applying them in different ways in the second project based upon learning

But with parallel projects you are still not assure how the IAC-1 will perform once it is operational , any glitches on IAC-1 may found their way on IAC-2 as well thus not only resulting into ruffling the time line but also will cause monetary set back .

I will reply tomorrow...by editing my this post...its time to say good night

Saala subah aaya ki IAC 1 missed the dead line by 2 years n in the evening india started work on IAC 2..heck man construction companies in india have no accountability be it roads bridges or ships, bus open the mouth and start sh! Tting..that will keep the public happy..

For the record,99.99% indian public doesn't know or care about indian defence. So jump starting any defence project isn't really aimed at keeping 'the public' happy. Except for the one in a million defence geeks, like you find here, for every one else,
Every aircraft,whether its a c 130j super herc,il 76,tejas,jf 17,f 22 are 'jet planes',RPG, or ATGM or Cruise missiles,all are 'missiles'

There was a news report back in 2009 about IAC 2 being 75000 tons with electric catapult. Boeing and Lockheed Martin were flying back and forth to Delhi pushing for carrier based E-3D also offered EMALS equipment.
