What's new

India spends 18.6% of its annual budget on military while 3.4% on health care

The statistics
Interesting.

China's Government budget is around $2.5 trillion per year, and we spend only 5% of the Government budget on defence.

Nearly the lowest in the world. That translates to around 1.4% of GDP.

China spends 18% on defense. Click on the link provided in then OP.

The bulk of healthcare spending in India is done by the 25+ State Governments - they have been taking up more of the healthcare burden as a part of ongoing federalism - and the Central Government has been transferring increasing amounts of money to them as well.

I am happy to note that the topic starter, and a number of other Pakistanis commenting on the issue haven't let their ignorance stand in way of their opinions. As Clint Eastwood said in Dirty Harry, 'Opinions are like @ssholes, everybody's got one' - I guess these jokers are the living proof.

In India, military spending is 18.6 percent of its total budget spending.
that's is 1.7-1.8% not 18%.

In India, health care spending is 3.4 percent of its total budget spending.
And that is much higher in both, percentage and quantity from your country.

Check your facts before posting. Or I will never step back from reporting such lies.
You and me both know very well about Indian Medical Facilities. So, better is not to smoke here or someone may give a laugh on you.

Interesting.
hey dude, don't get caught in his myths. India invests 1.78% and not 18.6%.

. .
Pakistanis make use of Indian medical facilities often when no option is available in Pakistan and they dont have the funding to go to another country (need I post the links over the years?).

Spare a thought for this before you go on shamelessly criticizing India for how much it decides to spend on Health (which %GDP and per capita is way more than Pakistan).

The results are manifested in such things as infant mortality rates, child mortality rates population pyramid structure and many other things....which are all improving faster than Pakistan as well.

If you think it is incorrect for China, what made you think the same data is correct for India?

I don't know what India's Government budget is, that's why I commented on China's Government budget instead.

So, what is India's Government budget?

Then what is 18.6% of that? If it comes up with some ridiculous number like $400 billion then it is obviously incorrect.

.
Protecting the country is probably the only responsibility that any form of government has. Providing healthcare, food, education etc. as the responsibilities of the government is debatable. These types of things should be the primary responsibility of the parents.

Was that supposed to be a joke

The data is wrong for India too.

Is this list correct?

List of government budgets by country - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It lists Indian Government revenues as $440 billion a year, which makes sense given the 5:1 GDP ratio from China to India.

Now 18.6% of $440 billion is $81 billion.

Whereas India's official defence spending for 2014 is around $45 billion.

So yes it seems the data in the OP is wrong by a big margin.

The confusion from OP and the author of that article arises from various measures of what constitutes govt spending (union budget, state budgets, union + state, planned + non planned etc...)

Total spending of 600 billion as posted by wiki sounds about right. We have to look at expenditures rather than revenues to compare % spending values, since revenues do not equal expenditures.

As for the level spent on health care. Public expenditure is about 1.3% of GDP according to WB:

Health expenditure, public (% of GDP) | Data | Table

That would be about 30 billion dollars right now. About 5% of the entire govt expenditure.

You will notice that China govt spending on health care is about 800 billion yuan

Inside China's $2.2 trillion budget - Economy

About 127 billion USD or so. So about 6% of total govt expenditure according to that site.

I would assume all these figures change again when we bring in private (and combined total health spending).

Yes it does. The government has to be for the people and elected by the people (Indirectly in India`s case). And the CoI confirms that.

1. Protection from foreign threats are crucial for a successful society. No doubt about that. May it be a settlement like in your example or a nation state.

2. But an educated/skilled labor force are equally important for a successful economy. No doubt about that either.
And a successful economy not only lifts living standards, but also eliminates inequality and reduces social unrest.
And in order to spent money on security against foreign threats you need money as well.

3. Health is equally important for a stable economy and having social peace.

So all these points go hand in hand and need to be taken care of.

There are subtle differences here. The housing society board may use the money to

Build a school for the kids in the neighborhood vs Pay fee for the poor kids in the neighborhood whose parents cannot afford to pay the fee for their kids

Build a hospital in the neighborhood vs Pay fee for the unhealthy people in the neighborhood who cannot afford to pay their doctor's fee and medicines

There are no right or wrong answers here. It just reflects the type of government at hand.

In India, health care spending is 3.4 percent of its total budget spending.

Talk about screwed up priorities.

Rich corrupt leaders hide this fact by rounding the military spending by the GDP, but GDP doesn't pay for the military, its the annual budget which does. By Annual budget, a poor country like India is spending lavishly on its military, while its citizens die everyday due to poor healthcare services.

How Countries Spend Their Money

Health care like education is a state subject
Central Govt Funding only goes to AIIMs and CGHS
The 29 States of India have a collective budget of 300 Billion USD
Since states don't spend on Military, you can check how much of that money goes into health care

Also Why do u think good healthcare is still the cheapest in India
