Maldives to extend visa of support staff

The Indian military helicopters, gifted to the Maldives, are likely to stay back along with a 48-member crew and support staff for at least the next few months as talks between the two countries on their continued deployment in the island nation were “positive”, diplomatic and military sources said on Sunday.

The lease agreement of the helicopters, given to Maldives in 2013, has expired and the island nation had conveyed to New Delhi that it would not like to retain them.

After several rounds of talks, however, there has been indication from the Maldives on its willingness to keep the two helicopters along with the crew and support staff, sources said.

They said the preliminary outcome of talks between the two countries on the issue has been positive and there was a possibility of the choppers being stationed there for a longer duration. “The helicopters and the support staff are not being brought back,” a highly-placed source said.

Sources said the Maldives was extending visas of the Indian staff.

Can't rule out. Let democracy play out it's role first. If it plays well, Maldives will play with you know who!(They are not in this thread till now). Otherwise time for India to play. No, war is not an option.

There has been no movement on the issue of Indian helicopters in the Maldives, said official sources, denying recent reports that the government of President Abdullah Yameen had softened its stand and allowed the helicopters and their crews to stay on.

“The stories are simply not true,” said a senior diplomatic source from Male.

The Maldivian government’s three-month-old demand, that India remove two helicopters and about 28 Naval personnel and pilots, whose visas expired in June, has not been renewed by the Yameen government, he added.

India gifted the helicopters to the Maldives in 2013 for coastguard surveillance as well as medical evacuations in the strategically located islands, and withdrawing them will be seen as a blow to India’s presence there. The MEA declined to comment.
