India's foreign minister will travel to China this weekend, New Delhi said on Wednesday, a day after Barack Obama ended a visit aimed at renewing US ties with the South Asian country.

Sushma Swaraj will go to Beijing on Sunday to "discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of concern to both sides" with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, India's government said in a statement.

They will also hold three-way talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the statement said.

The announcement followed a high-profile visit to New Delhi by the US president aimed at cementing ties between the two countries, which share an interest in curbing China's growing regional influence.

Although neither side mentioned China by name during Obama's three-day visit, the US president welcomed what he called a "greater role for India in the Asia Pacific" and said freedom of navigation in the region must be upheld.

Beijing claims sovereignty over large swathes of the South China Sea, home to maritime lanes that are vital to global trade.

India's new Prime Minister Narendra Modi is widely seen as taking a more assertive line on China than the previous government.

But experts say Modi will be careful not to alienate neighboring China, whose investment he desperately needs as he tries to boost India's economy.

Obama and Modi took pains to demonstrate their personal rapport during the US president's visit. But China's state news agency Xinhua has said it was a "superficial rapprochement", pointing to persistent differences on issues such as climate change.

India in such a hurry, which is unusual to Indians' habitual practice
Your thoughts are welcome!

Sergei Lavrov will be in Beijing again? He was there just 2 months ago. Seems the S&P downgrading of Russian sovereign debt is a major blow on top of the sanctions.

Evidently but Lavrov wont be in BJ asking for financial assistance from India
And the Indian FM's haste to appear in BJ immediately after Obama's visit and then a 3-way meeting are the hightlights of the visit

I guess the meeting is to clarify some doubtful minds
Also the preparation of Modi's visit to China next
and Su-30 to take over the Rafale deadlock
and the recent mentioning of a coalition on space station, what else?

Am thinking more like Understanding our core issues , Bullet trains , infrastructure investment, more opening for indians to invest in China , Arunachal , SCS , IOR ... Lots more . Let's hope for best when 3 beast of Asia comes together . . :yahoo::toast_sign:

Sure Lavrov will land in Beijing with a big agenda in his briefcase. Ukraine, Syria, S&P downgrade are all pressing issues at the moment. Is he bringing any commercial/financial colleagues? A few mega projects are in the middle of construction and continuous communication is essential.

The 3-way meeting wouldn't be of much importance.

Your list looks way too broad
I think our positions on South Tibet, SCS are very clear unless new propositions are to be added on India's side after Obama's visit. However, if USA wants to get deeper in the issues at hand, then they will stand to aggravate the tensions
So in view of the hurry, there is something pretty important for the development of the geopolical issues in the region
like you said SCS, IOR and others like Ukraine and Russian sanctions, arms sales

Probably Obama has asked Modi: " Are you with us or with the Russians? Your final answer please."

That's how super powers become friends. Showing of each other muscles then finally work out the damages due to conflicts so settle down to do business and keep the issues away for a while. China will be more positive this time as Russians and China don't want India getting closer to United stated even further than latest development .

Good for both nation . But not sure PLA will speak the same language of President Xi. Like they did on his last visit to new Delhi . All options open bro. Let's wait for some development

. . . .
The Americans are getting a lot more impatient to see this Indian tactics

not only americans...but russians too.......in the end...it will be very difficult for us to balance and will have to choose a side..............going with americans fully means going against a strong china which shares border with us....capital being only 500kms away...and has nuclear pakistan's support

....going with russia+china means ....total isolation from the west...sanctions etc etc

LMAO ... just like Bush said "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists!" like >10 years ago.
And nowadays Russia, an UNSC-P5 member, replace the terrorists? Laughable.
The neoconservative warhawks are constantly seeking enemy openly, but they never forget the Voldemort.
Beijing has to work with Russia to hold firmly against Western sanctions, economic warfare and Ukraine deflection.
Let's see how the game is played.

"....China truly was what two U.S. Naval War College professors called “the Voldemort of U.S. military planning”—he who must not be named—and both the Air Force and Navy were focused on irregular warfare, as well as supporting the ongoing conflicts in Southwest Asia...."
