India plans to build big dams over Brahmaputra: Bharti | Zee News

New Delhi: In a bid to establish India's riparian rights over use of water from the transboundary Brahmaputra river, the Centre is planning a massive dam in Arunachal Pradesh, which would also help control floods in Assam and produce power.

Union Government is discussing the project with Arunachal Pradesh government proposed with a capacity of between nine and 13 BCM in Siang region of the state.

"We are planning two projects on Brahmaputra, which I have briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about. The solution on Brahmaputra's perennial flow lies in middle Siang. Even Siang is the answer for floods in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam... The problem for the Brahmaputra nd problem from the Brahmaputra are both going to be sorted out within a very short period," Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti told reporters here.

According to Additional Secretary of Water Resources Ministry Amarjit Singh, "once we have a storage dam, we get the right for that quantum of water as a riparian state under the international practices.

"If you have a storage dam in India on an international river, it gives us right for that much water," Singh said.

Pointing out that the dam would also be helpful in a big way for controlling floods in Assam, he said that about 9600 MW of power could be produced through the facility.

The development comes in the wake of India having an agreement only to receive flood level data of the river flowing from neighbouring China.

On the other hand, Singh said, the Water Resources Ministry is planning to strengthen over seven lakh water storing structures including ponds and other water bodies along the Ganga and Yamuna rivers.

China put into operation its first major dam on the middle reaches of the Brahmaputra river, with the first section of the 510 MW project taking off in Zangmu in Tibet.

The Zangmu dam, on which construction began in 2010, raised attention in India as the first major hydropower project on the middle reaches of the Brahmaputra, which has its source in Tibet, where it is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo (or Zangbo in Chinese).

Indian officials have said they have received assurances from China that the dam is a run of the river hydropower generation project, which will neither divert the river's waters nor have a major impact on downstream flows.

bhai you never read his comment . i know all of s.asians have problem from each other and its politics but water is something else i think its our moral we serve water to enemy if he need .

Bhai I agree with you. Some guys are just trolling, don't take them seriously.

Its human nature that we can hate each other all we want but in times of greater need like earthquakes, famine, flood etc we will band together. Otherwise why would Pakistan help evacuate Indian Civilians in Kashmir or why would India offer help to Pak during Kashmir earthquake.

Don't worry, we are not that evil that we will deny water

I couldnt see the pic. But its impossible to divert Brahmaputra river to India's heartland :D Because of geography. Other than that there could be dozens of dams by now ;)
Now that you mention it, its not impossible there has been a project since Last NDA govt for river linking which involved re-routing of the same but was never implemented due to prohibitive cost and land acquisition problems

bhai i think humans in neighboring countries have right to be live and drink and eat .

Bhai they dont care. If it was possible to divert the water they'd divert it by now. These guys care about elephant and cows. And curse people if anyone kills them. But they would eat their food themselves and divert their necessary water :(

Brahmaputra's main water diverting is impossible to India's main land. Without involving BD in the process.

On June 4, Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati told reporters that "the solution on Brahmaputra's perennial flow lies in middle Siang" and that the river "is the answer for floods in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam".

The Siang flows for 294 km in the state and many of its tributaries serve as a lifeline for close to 2.5 lakh people.

Centre's plans to build two massive dams on Siang river
