India planning to tie up with Russia in naval ship-building field

New Delhi: India is planning to tie up with Russia for enhancing self reliance in capabilities for design and development of all types of warships, including submarines, for the Navy and the Coast Guard.

The Defence Ministry is planning to have a tie-up between the Kerala-based National Institute of Research and Development in Defence Shipbuilding (NIRDESH) and Russian Krylov Institute for working in this direction, officials told PTI here.

The Russian institute, set up in 1890s, has been working in this field for a very long time and can help NIRDESH to augment its capabilities, they said.

NIRDESH was launched on January 4, 2011 by Defence Minister A K Antony to help in developing a robust defence industrial base by providing technology support and promote ancillary industry participation in the defence shipbuilding sector.

The issue was also discussed at the meeting of the Board of Governors of NIRDESH headed by the Defence Minister, who is also the chairman of the institute.

The meeting decided to appoint the head of the Naval Design Directorate as the nodal officer to support NIRDESH as the Navy would be the biggest beneficiary out of the output of the institute, they said.

A sub-committee has also been appointed by the Ministry to prepare a roadmap for growth of NIRDESH while another would examine and select Research and Development projects to be undertaken by it.

"One project on indigenisation of rubber items used on Scorpene submarines is already progressing at the Rubber Research Institute of India at Kottayam," they said.

NIRDESH will also take up projects related to development of civilian vessels.

AK Antony's gift to his home state...hmmm

I hope this "NIRDESH" tying up with any Russian ship design institute proves beneficial and they can enhance and design some advanced vessels on time.

I hope this "NIRDESH" tying up with any Russian ship building yard proves beneficial and they can build some advanced vessels on time.

Every existing port in India is flooded with orders and so this distribution of manufacturing facilities is good.

India is concentrating (from the begining) its maritime defense industry in Southern Indian shores, away from Pakistan range.

Kerala is a good place to set up R&D units. It has a very well educated and capable population with excellent educatation and has strong connections to the Navy and to the ocean itself.

Kerala needs industries to employ its highly educated youth - I agree, let's see how these new defense industries fructify over the years - there are a host of defense industries that have been started in Kerala thanks to A K Anthony.

You are from Kerala, aren't you? :P

Hahahaha what a argument buddy ;)

Every place is good place if its your state ;)

Still good luck

and some people believe we are moving away from Russia . Still Russia is the best when it comes to the matter of trust and tech transfer .

All the important statergic industries should be located in Kerala or TN away from the Pakistanis & Chinese

Then why not on the eastern coast. That is much much more secure. Remember all out missile tests and nuke sub are all happening in east coast.

I have nothing against Kerala getting the orders but lets not deny the obvious relations ship between Antony and his state.

East coast is only doing the testing, how many fixed defense assets are there?

Nothing to do with Anthony, trust me.

Ever since he became a MoD, how many such defense projects have gone to Kerala?

.
Missile testing is the more secretive than building them in underground bunker (which can be done anywhere). And there was and is nothing more secretive than the ATV project (i.e. Arihant class submarine). There is no comparison that the East coast is far more secure than west coast.

And a simple google search gave me the following top 3 results. Now you what to do if you want to find out more about whats going on.

Defence Minister shepherds projects to Kerala

Antony channels defence projects to his state Kerala

Antony’s Kerala now defence hub

As I said before I have no issues with majority of projects going to Kerala. But lets not pretend. Antony is not different than Lalu and Mamta.
