India offers USD1 bln loan to 'bailout' Maldives
19 hours ago
India is considering providing up to USD1 billion in loans to the Maldives to help it pay its debt to China, India media has reported.

India is in talks with the Maldives, offering low-interest loans over several installments in exchange for stronger security ties, including the permanent deployment of Indian military personnel in the island nation, according to Indian government sources quoted by the country's media.

The countries are expected to iron out the details before new Maldives president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who took office on earlier this month visits India in December.

The island nation has amassed billions in debt to China to fund mega development projects initiated by former Maldives president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Beijing has provided grant and loans to fund several major infrastructure projects including a landmark bridge connecting the capital Male to the airport island Hulhule.

Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj agreed to cooperate on economic and security issues at a Monday meeting in New Delhi.

Shahid "reiterated that the government of Maldives will be sensitive towards India's security and strategic concerns," the Indian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that India supports the Maldives "in ensuring fiscal and budgetary stability."

Shahid’s visit comes just over a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Solih’s swearing-in ceremony.

The visit is Modi's first to the Maldives after years of tense relations between the two countries because of Solih's predecessor's embrace of China during his tenure.

Not really. Our government says China forbid them to tell how much investment Chinese have done in Pakistan. How much is loan and how much is investment, we just don't know. If you have numbers please enlighten us
Is doesn't matter. Most important Pakistan economy is not in any danger of default. China is always in position to bail out pakistan. While Sri Lanka or Maldives do not have such luxury. Yet we see such ungrateful Pakistanis accusing China.

Who knows one day you are going to say same for Pakistan .

@Norwegian None of that is China's fault, Pakistani Leaders a free to decline any loan or investments from China or any other country. Lets not forget Pakistan went to IMF 12 times before CPEC. The blame falls comepletely on Pakistan leaders for mismanaging the countries economy.

Now, everyone can see who really has ulterior designs for Maldives, the one who'd been crying wolf is actually the real wolf, China never asked for military presence in Maldives, there's no need for China to do that, business is strictly business.
But anyway it's good for China that India can help Maldives to pay China back, now we don't have to worry about payment default.

Actullay we are more than happy to get the money back from India. much better than a default or begging for a wirte off.

Of course you are.:azn:

Its not just about Maldives though is it, same thing happened in Sri Lanka too. This builds a narrative, a negative narrative which China hates and other smaller countries become wary of china's ulterior designs.

They will do same with pakistan.

We don't need bailout from India. Our brother higher than Himalaya and deeper than Indian Ocean, sweeter than honey will surely help us. @beijingwalker

It would have better added "Trap" instead of "help", Chinese are more inclined towards their earnings rather than others problems :-).

Keep bashing China and you will see.

@Norwegian, I think you got your first warning :pop: fall in line or you will fall :-)

Srilankans are still confused what to do with hambantota.

we can convert it to an amusement park :yahoo:
