India not granted MFN status, says Gilani

Those 'few industries' employ hundreds of thousands of people directly and indirectly, and 'trashing them' is not useful by any means for Pakistan.

Regulated trade in which these industries are both protected and areas in which Pakistan benefits opened to trade with India is the way to go.

Then what about trade with china??Last night,i was watching the debate on pakistani channel.
They were mentioning how chinese goods destroyed the local economy calling them as friendly fire:azn:
now you are trading with india so these few industries are creating problems??
i said,it goes both sides but indian large population can digest it but on other hand paksitan cant do this.

.
Then why release the Indian chopper after five hours, instead of holding it for longer and milking it for propaganda?

There are valid concerns over unregulated trade with India, and the cabinet decision could have been perceived as a 'rush to open the flood gates of trade' (inaccurately perhaps) which resulted in pushback and lobbying from various industrial and financial groups.

Not everything is an Army/ISI conspiracy, though I suppose your Pakistani origins predispose you towards 'conspiracy theories and paranoia', as the West and Indians like to describe Pakistani society as :D

We are on the same page overall, just on different paragraphs. ;)

Trade with India is too important to be left to the corrupt politicians. I really mean that.

My comment is not meant to show any inclination on my part to blame everything on ISI; it merely shows a tacit recognition of Army's "input" in this foreign policy matter. :D

.
No it isn't clear, because if the military really ran all foreign affairs, rather than providing input and being an influential player, Khar would not be briefing military officials AFTER THE FACT.

If the military was that involved in the MFN decision making process, then it would have never been passed in the first place by the cabinet.

but here govt just orders military, dont consult them or take permission:azn:
and ashiq awan was saying that military has been assured,so its gonna be passed.

Yes, we should look at the impact of trade with China and not make the same mistake again and 'trash' even more industries, correct?

MFN status: India downplays confusing signals from Pak

India on Saturday downplayed the confusing signals from Islamabad over the grant of Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to it even as the Pakistan Prime Minister backtracked saying Commerce Ministry has only been tasked by the Cabinet to move forward in bilateral trade negotiations.

Asked about the confusing remarks from Pakistan government, Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai read out the statement by Pakistan Commerce Ministry after the Cabinet meeting which said, “It has the mandate to take forward the process of normalisation of trade relations between India and Pakistan, which would culminate in the observance of Most Favoured Nation (MFN) principle in its true spirit”.

“According to the information available through the Pakistan government, the Cabinet has approved the process of normalisation of trade relations of which MFN is a part. The actual implementation would be a culmination of the normalisation process which could take some time,” he said.

Backtracking on the issue, Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the Commerce Ministry has only been tasked by the Cabinet to move forward in bilateral trade negotiations.

His statement came three days after Pakistan Information Minister Firdous Awan announced following a Cabinet meeting that it has been decided “unanimously” to grant MFN status to India.

The briefing to the military appears to have been from the impact of granting MFN status on Pakistan's foreign policy towards India, especially WRT Kashmir, and not so much about 'trade'.

Trade with China is already in place and the impact already felt - why do you think Pakistan should repeat that and 'trash' even more industries through unregulated trade with India?

Well because China is a friend and we benefit in many other ways such as diplomatically, militarily etc, we can justify it, but not with india.

.
How mfn affects kashmir??i didnt get this:hitwall:
Not the MFN directly, but the direction of Pakistani foreign policy towards India with the granting of the MFN.

Try and expand your thought process a bit.

.
I think after "Friendly fire" from china-- pakistan has learned her lesson.

We don't need to worry -- loss is there.

OK one simple question.

Was it required for the whole cabinet to unanimously approve the following :

Tasking the commerce minister to look in to MFN status grant to India.

That is all.

Trade with India must be opened up, no doubt, but with proper safeguards and supervision.
