India negotiates for more AEW systems

yeah the fools back then used a retired obsolescent HS 48 aircraft which was way past its service life but we have a better although expensive platform now ^__^ at least we can make our own AWACS although i wish we could make our own platform as well who knows maybe NAL might offer its regional jet (when its ready) for AWACS use

R-99 per unit cost is 80 million G550 is 50 million besides we could have had IAI modify it for us if we needed to cheaply

we could mount the DRDO AEW&C on the G550 not the EL/2085 we already getting 6 Phalcons from Israel the rest of our AWACS fleet will be the DRDO AWACS on the R-99 but my point is the G550 has longer range more endurance higher service ceiling and costs much loss compared to the R-99


It is too hard to modify the G 550 to increase the cabin space..which means widening the fuselage. It will have a lot of implications on the aircraft performance.

dude they used a retired HS148 that air India had retired due to "problems" the aircraft was doomed the day they brought it we should have just leased another aircraft from Russia or US Brazil etc that way our indigenous AWACS would have been in service today without the loss of 8 crew that perished on that doomed aircraft

how much cabin space do we need??? the Israelis can fit they're AWACS on it why can't we? is our radar too big or something?

Because they have a JV with Gulfstream and closer ties with the US, so who told you that the G550 was on offer for us by the US? Did they allow us to integrate custom made systems like we do it with the Brazilian aicraft and apart of the wiki figures, is there another source that it is cheaper than the R99?
From DRDOs point of view the R99 was a good choice, because the platfrom was already available with a similar radar array like they are developing, which means you don't need much changes for that. So for a first AWACS development, choosing that platform and Embraer as an experienced partner was a bad decision at all, they should even deepen the ties with them and go for a new JV and a bigger AWACS aircraft, based on one of their bigger civilian versions and full 360° coverage.

Regarding cabin space, the bigger the better, because you can carry more equipment, more crew, more operator stations..., that's why the A50 is such a good platform, or why others uses bigger Boeing aircrafts too.

Could be due to internal capacity- R-99 has almost twice the cabin space as the G550 which is important when considering fitting monitors, operators and other facilities required on these machines.

+ the range issue is eliminated as IAF R-99s will have a2a refuelling capabilities.
G550 can carry more heavy radar platforms than R-99 and number of operators - 6 is pretty enough I think (Saab 340 AEW&C has only 4 operators).

but the G550 has a AEW variant the the Israelis operate a newer version of the Phalcon called the EL/W-2085 which is much more capable than the current phalcon

I hope you didn't misunderstand me, I'm sure the G550 is a fine machine. It is just that, though having much in common, India and Israel face very different tactical scenarios and have to have different responses to these scenarios.

I was talking about payload but actual practical size of the cabin, it is possible- for whatever, reason that the IAaf required more cabin space in this platform for extra crew men, extra facilities certain equipment whatever, who knows? it is entirely possible that as the R-99 the IAF has ordered comes with a a2a refeulling probe the IAF intends to keep their platforms in the air for extended periods of time, this may explain the need fprmextra cabin space to accomadat this particular requirement.


The truth is we don't know, exactly, how this selection/elimination worked. It could have been down to offsets,TOT, expertise, past experience, flexibility etc
