India negotiates for more AEW systems

Cant we buy Russian AWACS?
Just curious

we could but not as good as the Israeli Phalcon and plus we are making our own AWACS for much less and indigenously in the future we should make more AWACS using the Indian regional jet to be made by NAL

.
I am not sure but I think we have placed order for just 5 of them(phalcons) and rest would be drdo awacs. correct me if Iam wrong.:undecided:

We have placed order for <> what we need in a long run. The long run will be to have lot more Phalcon type of AEW, However may be thats what is not needed now looking at the geo-politics and our near future requirement. Thats why we placed order for 3+2 additional AEW and for rest DRDO will provide.

But again thats short term goal.

. . .
we will get a total of 6 Phalcon AWACS and 20+ DRDO Awacs

IMHO we should have placed the DRDO Awacs on a Gulfstream G550 because it has longer range. better endurance and higher service ceiling than the Embraer R-99

PLUS THE G550 IS MUCH CHEAPER COMPARED TO THE R-99 50 MILLION USD COMPARED TO 80 MILLION USD WTH WAS DRDO/MOD THINKING????

Could be due to internal capacity- R-99 has almost twice the cabin space as the G550 which is important when considering fitting monitors, operators and other facilities required on these machines.

+ the range issue is eliminated as IAF R-99s will have a2a refuelling capabilities.

but the G550 has a AEW variant the the Israelis operate a newer version of the Phalcon called the EL/W-2085 which is much more capable than the current phalcon

G550 Airborne Early Warning: Israel has acquired a number of G550s, fitted with Elta's EL/W-2085 sensor package (a newer derivative of the Phalcon system) for Airborne Early Warning (AEW) use and named the aircraft Eitam. This aircraft is heavily modified for the AEW role by Gulfstream's partner, IAI, and is also called CAEW (Conformal Airborne Early Warning) by Gulfstream Special Missions Department. Israel has also acquired a number of communications jamming equipped G550s dubbed SEMA (Special Electronic Missions Aircraft) with systems integration also carried out by IAI.[8] Singapore ordered four similar G550 CAEW aircraft equipped with the EL/W-2085 sensor package from Gulfstream and IAI.[9][10]

we should have just gotten this G550 AEW variant and put our DRDO AWACS system on it mainly because the G550 does not need to be refueled and can last several hours before even having to refuel + its faster

the R-99's are much more expensive and less capable

G 550 is a good choice but accommodating the control systems in it is rather impossible due to lack of cabin space.

. .
it has enough cabin space for our needs besides we could ask GS to modify it for us if we need to

That is why the cost of R 99 shot up. Modifications are costly. Well the DRDO system is a AEW&C system and the EL/M 2085 mounted on the G 550 is a AEW system which has its controls in a GCI integration. The Phalcon carries the C2 system on board....the DRDO will integrate the AIRAWAT to phalcon thorugh AWACS to get a complete picture of the aerospace. That is the whole Idea.

R-99 per unit cost is 80 million G550 is 50 million besides we could have had IAI modify it for us if we needed to cheaply

we could mount the DRDO AEW&C on the G550 not the EL/2085 we already getting 6 Phalcons from Israel the rest of our AWACS fleet will be the DRDO AWACS on the R-99 but my point is the G550 has longer range more endurance higher service ceiling and costs much loss compared to the R-99

if we had a better platform available in 1980s than the hs 148s,we would had our awacs flying by now

yeah the fools back then used a retired obsolescent HS 48 aircraft which was way past its service life but we have a better although expensive platform now ^__^ at least we can make our own AWACS although i wish we could make our own platform as well who knows maybe NAL might offer its regional jet (when its ready) for AWACS use
