India, Israel to step up naval ties


NEW DELHI: As part of their expanding defence relationship, India and Israel on Tuesday decided to further step up cooperation in the naval arena.

They also agreed to give a greater thrust to ongoing projects like upgradation of Indian naval Sea Harrier jump-jets and the joint development of advanced 'Barak' anti-missile defence systems.

This came during meetings of the visiting Israeli navy chief vice-admiral David Ben Bashat with his counterpart Admiral Sureesh Mehta as well as IAF chief Air Chief Marshal F H Major, Army chief General J J Singh and defence secretary Vijay Singh.

As reported by The Times of India earlier, India has purchased defence equipment worth well over $5 billion from Israel during 2002-2007, ranging from hand-held thermal imagers and 'Barak' anti-missile defence systems, Aerostat and Green Pine radars to Heron and Searcher-II UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles).

In 2006 alone, India bought military hardware and software worth $1.5 billion from Israel, making it Tel Aviv's largest defence customer.

Then, of course, there are several ongoing joint R&D projects like the recently approved the Rs 10,000-crore joint programme to develop an advanced 'Barak' surface-to-air missile system for the IAF, after the Indian Navy bought 14 Barak-I systems for Rs 1,160 crore in an earlier deal.

There is nothing wrong with business deals as long they dont effect your own policies. China sells weapons to Sudan, which eventually were used in Darfur. After criticism from International media, China is still suppying weapons to them. My point is India is not the first one to deal with country which accused of human right violations and certainly not the last one. India has not changed it's policy on Palestine.

My point is India is not the first one to deal with country which accused of human right violations and certainly not the last one. India has not changed it's policy on Palestine.

True. Business is business. Specially when India needs to narrow its large technology gap.

China should not have poped out in this discussion. But since it has, china has record supplying weapons even to Hutu Army who committed the Rwanda genocide in 90's.
