India interested in Japan’s bullet train technology

I think a two-pronged approach is required.

The major emphasis should be on upgrading the speed of the existing infrastructure to 200km. This would retain affordability for current travellers and also see real speed benefits for everyone.

The secondary objective would be to construct one high speed line of 3-350 km/h initially between two major cities. Let us use Delhi-Mumbai as an example. This would ensure that there would be enough passengers to allow at least the operating cost and the gradual payback of the cost of putting in the line to start from day one. As each year passes, you will see more and more people being able to afford to use the line and so the rate of paying back for the infrastructure cost keeps going up.

Then after say 5 years you will build another high speed line, and then another one after another 5 years, and the process continues till all major cities are connected by high-speed rail. The timescale would run into many decades but it would mean that India would get faster affordable trains as their incomes allow and not put the central budget under undue strain.

This, here!!!

Although HSR's require a massive initial investment, I think the Railways can get a sizable part of the funding by monetizing vast amount of its lands that they have at their disposal throughout India. That land is not only idle, and an eyesore right in the middle of almost all cities, it is also a target of relentless encroachment.

HSR will help move the load on the badly congested Indian roads to the Railways. The benefits are almost unimaginable -- much better fuel efficiency, reduction in pollution, less wasted perishable and farm goods, boost to tourism and most importantly it will unclog our big cities while providing comfort and saving time for travelers!!!

For me, if Modi can just build HSR across just like the highways, and do NOTHING else at all, he would have repaid the faith people have put in him.

I believe Bullet trains must be introduced at select long-distance lines soon. It would revolutionize travel within India and be of immense help to the tourism sector.

And the Indian government should also revolutionise normal train travel, by a concept alien to Indians.

I've seen dumpyards cleaner than some train cabins. And the stench....well...:suicide2:

not to be a stickler here, I mean don't you think it is a bit odd looking at the state of Indian railways to have bullet trains? A massive leap in technoloy in terms of transportation for the Indian railways?

Unless, it is used for purposes other than passnger trains I can understand.

Like most things Indian, our railways too has seen asymmetric growth and development. Some lines are pretty modern while some others remain locked in Victorian times. I believe that it isn't beyond the Indian Railways' grasp to introduce bullet trains between 4-5 major cities.

May be it's high time to privatize Indian railways.What do you say?

I think privatizing such a huge entity might be counterproductive. What's needed is an impetus of corporate energy in most of our Sarkari establishments. It can be turned into a Joint-stock Company with the Govt retaining a major stake.

Not even China developed their own. I find this "make at home" fetish among Indians most bizarre. In most areas India is behind the developed world in terms of quality of production and yet Indians are obsessed with the fact they can develop whatever they please straightaway at the drop of a hat?
