These aircraft's have been in our inventory for well over a decade now. they were on lease from Russia. not much was reported about them , Since we joined MTCR , we can now legally buy the long range missiles for them without any problem.
These aircraft were leased under the euphemistic tag of "maritime surveillance" though whether they were ever used for that purpose is anybody's guess.

Tu-22M3 seems like overkill. a couple sqaudrons of Su-34 Fullback wold be perfect.

It's probably for SCS against the islands. They have interests and investments with Vietnam in those waters. It could also mean deeper penetration into Pakistan once they deteriorate their air defenses.

1. I dont think India will lease this time.. as india is now full fledged member of MTCR... it can officially buy long range weapons.. and other tech without any major hassle. that been said these sets of Tu should be coming with refuelling pods.. if so its range will be Intercontinental.. meaning SCS..
2. Well maintenance of these kinda aircraft are always high.. it suffered heavily during fall of Soviet.. but now it has been upgraded with new engines and other changes according to the video posted above by @fsayed .. so i guess it should definitely improve..
3. Possible weapons.. Brahmos.. just imagine the fire power.. launch from andaman together with our Pi's and escorted by SU.. can create such massive destruction over enemy ships.. its just mind boggling.
