India has highest number of people living below poverty line: World Bank
India accounted for the largest number of people living below international poverty line in 2013, with 30 per cent of its population under the $1.90-a- day poverty measure, the World Bank said.

India accounts for one in three of the poor population worldwide, the world body said in its inaugural edition of the report 'Poverty and Shared Prosperity', according to which extreme poverty worldwide continued to fall despite the global economy's "under-performance".

"India is by far the country with the largest number of people living under the international USD 1.90-a-day poverty line, more than 2.5 times as many as the 86 million in Nigeria, which has the second-largest population of the poor worldwide," the report said.

India had 30 per cent of its population living below poverty line at 224 million, it said.

Nearly 800 million people lived on less than USD 1.90 a day in 2013, around 100 million fewer poor people than in 2012, it added.

@Kaptaan : shows where our priorities as a region are :P

30 % is too huge a number for the size of India.

Lets hope Indians work hard and bring it down to 3 % in next 10 years :-)

30 to 3 in 10 years!!!!! Will be very tough.

.
Definition of 'poor' changes country to country. Nevertheless India will have a large percentage based on $2 poverty line.

I donot see point of these threads, may it is lack of opener's thinking capacity
We have 1.2 billion+ population

We will be in Top 3 or 5 in

in Number of Billionaires
in Total Automobile production
in Number of poor people
in Number of Shoe owner
in Number of smartphone ownership
In any Random Stat

Country with large population will always remain in top when it comes to number

Bhai this media report got the number (30%) completely wrong. Someone cannot do math apparently.

You can check within the report by the World Bank itself:

https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/bitstream/handle/10986/25078/9781464809583.pdf

The number is 224 million for 2013, but that is not 30% of India's population....more like around 18% (population for 2013 was around 1.25 billion)

Mind you this is under the older (less accurate) URP methodology which put India at 21% poverty in 2011.

So keeping it at the URP definition, thats 1.5% drop per year which is decent progress I would say.

The better method is MMRP which put India poverty rate at around 12% by international standards in 2011.

No MMRP has since been done by the NSSO or MOSPI since the earlier survey, so we will have to wait to see what this figure will be in a later report down the road.

Thats good since it gives time for the World Bank to standardise as many countries in the world as possible to use MMRP over URP.

The 30% number seems to come from page 44:

Among countries, the largest contributor is India, where 30 percent of the world’s poorest children live.

Which is a completely different statement than the media article has put out here (shoddy journalism).

Let me also point you to the summary of India in the report (page 49):

India’s poverty numbers For this report, as with many other countries, the total poor population in India is based on estimates rather than actual numbers provided through a household survey collected in the year of reference, in this case, 2013. Such estimates are subject to a great deal of uncertainty, which typically arises because of revisions of national accounts in each country. This is also the case in India, on which the estimates for 2013 and the adjusted historical series reflect the government’s periodic revisions of the growth in private consumption expenditure and the population. Notwithstanding the revisions, no methodological change underpins the 2013 poverty estimates for India with respect to 2012.

In addition, the poverty estimates for India at the global poverty line are historically based on the Uniform Reference Period consumption aggregate, which involves a 30-day recall among respondents in the recording of all items of consumption. For 2011/2012, this implies a poverty rate of 21.2 percent at the US$1.90 poverty line. Since 2009, however, the Multiple Mixed Reference Period has also been used in the collection of consumption data. The methodology is closer to best international practice. It relies on recall periods among respondents of 7, 30, and 365 days, depending on the items of consumption. If the consumption estimate derived from the latter methodology had been used to estimate India’s poverty rate, the result at the US$1.90 poverty line would have been a substantially lower 12.4 percent in 2011/2012. The application of the methodology is still being tested. Its adoption would eventually lead to a substantial downward revision of the poverty numbers in India.

We have 1.3 billion people...
We have developed China into the world's second largest economy, with a per capita of US $8500. 200 million middle class population. World's largest high-speed rail network. Biggest car market. The largest luxury market. World's first shipbuilding country. World's largest auto producer. China is also a member of the international organization for migration (IOM).
================================
So it is very difficult for China to develop to the present, it took 38 years for China, and then Xi Jinping said, "China will become a high-income country in 2024". Hope India friends ironic China, can understand. Such a vast territory and population. China is not easy... If TOI's India friends come here and hope that he sees.
