India: Five women stripped, paraded naked in Jharkhand

Ranchi, October 19: Five women were stripped and paraded naked in Deoghar district of Jharkhand after being charged of witchcraft, police said Monday.

Five women, including three widows, were forcibly brought to a field Sunday in Patharghatia village in Deoghar, about 350 km from state capital Ranchi. They were stripped and paraded naked and two of them were forced to eat excreta, police said.

"Sushila Kumahrin, Sagiran Beebi, Hafijan Beebi, Sujan Beebi and Gulnar Beebi were tortured to accept that they were witches and practise black magic. The incident took place at the instruction of a witch doctor. The witch doctor said that these women were practising black magic and were causing problems in the village," a police officer told IANS.

The women were rescued when local government officials and police reached the spot. However, the perpetrators managed to escape.

According to reports, hundreds of people witnessed the incident.

"We have lodged an FIR (First Information Report) against 11 people, including six women. We will soon arrest the perpetrators," the officer added.

Majority of perpetrators were Muslims and four of the five victims belonged to the same community.

In Jharkhand, women are subjected to different forms of torture after being branded witches. There are instances when women have been paraded naked, forced to eat human excreta and even killed.

According to official data, more than 700 people, majority of them women, were killed after being branded witches. The witch doctors manage to escape as people fear black magic if they are named.

Firstly i regret and condemn the whole incident in the strongest of terms.

1. Mr. Al-zakir you don't understand the whole issue or the socio-economic status of the region and have absolutely no clue what you are coloring as communal.

2. its often Ppl who make such comments like yours in my country who cause riots.

3. lemme explain...
a)Am from the same region.

b)Its backward and tribal.

c)GOI has largely been totally ineffective in the growth and development in the region.

d) tribal in the region inherit this deplorable yet deep rooted superstition in witch craft and often such incidents are reported.

e) Such shameful incidents often occur and victimize women in general. demagogue Witch doctors like the one in this incidents just hoodwink the whole community... these witchdoctors are neither hindu's nor muslims... they are just thugs!

f) This is a case of "witchcraft" and superstition... not some anti-Muslim thing!

g)As you yourself can read in the report you posted that there were nearly 700 women victims... Taking a case where it just happened that 4 of the 5 victim women were Muslims and generalizing it on the state of Muslims of India is totally BS.

A very shameful incident indeed and shame on you TS for trying to give the incident a communal tinge. You failed to see the lines---

As many other rightly pointed out the main problem we are facing after 62 years of independence is education. That region of India is even more backward than the rest as far as education goes with literacy rate merely over 50%.

So it is mainly a problem of the whole society rather than a group of people with a particular belief and I feel abased.
