India faces Afghan test, as ally calls for military aid

India had previously provided many spare parts for migs and sus of Afghan Air Forces - and I am quite sure they are gonna take this opportunity and supply some weapons to ANSF as it was already discussed in the strategic partnership agreement.

Pakistani fellows: we are going to have a strategic pact with you guys as well and there may be military aid from Pakistan too so bear in mind that any military gear coming from India will only help us fighting an insurgency not a war with a nuclear power!

Khochaa teriii ANA ke liyee tou hamaraaa Tribal hii kaafiii hai ! :D

Bhai Aid nahin Trade...hamariii aid Zardari khataa haii tumharii aid Karzaii khaiii ga; stop sending us 'dry fruit' & make something that can grip the Pakistani market by the throat - gas, natural resources, more limestone for our raw material starved cement industry or even iron ore for our foundries...perhaps even finished products !

I hope it happen, but I doubt it happen under Sonia-MMS govt. MMS is spineless Prime Minister. Till 2014 Indian stand will be same I mentioned. After 2014 it can shift...

And moreover there are many different way to procure weapons. I think NATO will not leave Afghan in lurch this time. NATO will continuously keep eye on Taliban/AQ/Pakistan.

And moreover Indo-Afghan relation was never on cost of Pakistan. Pakistan is not at all consider when we discuss Indo-Afghan relation. in 21st century Only fool or terrorist can use nuclear weapon.

I dont think India should try to overreach its capability by giving military aid. Make ordinary afgan's life easier by building hospitals/roads etc and let Afgans source their weapons from US/Russia.

This has nothing to do with national party politics don't know why some of you think BJP will run over Pakistan at the first available opportunity.

Agree Pakistan can not be trusted as they will never unload their historical baggage but in this scenario Pakistan is a key stake holder.I suggest it should be joint effort by India and pakistan to help Afganistan stand up on tis own legs. This way their will be no mistrust in both the countries about the other country.

What are we going to gain from being in Afghanistan in terms of defence its only that we can attack pakistan from two sides. So Pakistan has a concern and they will try to dislodge us from Afghanistan. If we take them along they will not have that fear and both countries can do trade and afghanistan will be progress.Afghanistan can earn revenues on Oil and gas transit and trade mineral reserves with all the countries.Trade should be the way forward and not aid.

Upside to this is no bloodshed as Pakistan can get taliban to the table we can work with pashtuns,we may get a trade route thru Pakistan, the economic benifit will shared by both the countries,we will have better understanding and peace on the Indo -Pak border, issues like sir creek and siachen can be solved...Will have better understanding of each others position on kashmir, some of the historical hatered can be reduced, very good trade relation between India and Pakistan.

As a spin of all this the fundamental elements in Pakistan will fade off, both countries will get a better international recognition,Less money will be spent on defence procurement as their will a peace and harmony the same can be used for betterment of our people on both sides,a sccarc trading block can be created. All this will take time and lot of patience but is worth giving a try as we owe it to our next generations.

Many of you will not agree to what I say even I am dobtfull as I say but this is the best opportunity as it is in a third country where this is happening so no county will hold back in cooperating.A stable Afghanistan is in every ones interest.Pakistan would not like to be he bad boy as any thing goes wrong they will be blamed.Uncle Sam will be present is some small way monitoring all this so we will have a neutral umpire. On the trust front we don't trust each other but some one has to make a start.European union is one excellent example in the recent past.As both Afghanistan and Pakistan are predominantly muslim countries it is a must to have Pakistan on board.

As we are in this to win the hearts and mind of people of Afghanistan and Pakistan wants to have its influence in its neibghourhood and has security concerns.....this model is worth a serious try.

My only interest here is I can grow old and tell my grand children we gave it a try........

Dude instead of talking here why dose not Pakistan sign a border agreement with Afghanistan and supply them with weapons after all we have no problem if Pakistan supports Afghanistan (and pls not the Taliban)

We need weapons ourself hence we can not spare any for them. Besides ANA had been decorated with alot of equipment by NATO lets see how these equipment will play.

I predict with conviction it will play in hands of warlords in event of fall out viz a viz political situation in the country.

As far Indian supply of weapons i am NOT sure what is the stand of Indian Govt BUT i will like to ask you what you guys intend or suggest in this regard keeping in mind your Indian interests since nobody act out of love for anyone but own interests.

Why cant Pakistan become the Architect of a free fair and Democratic Afghanistan. if Pakistan stop supporting the Taliban in Afghanistan automatically u guys win yourself an ally.

Negotiations for including Taliban in next Afghan Govt are on rather finalised. Many Taliban commanders have been released and many had to be.

The US/UN/ Kabul all supporting This new plan hence there is NO question of NOT supporting Taliban.

last but NOT the least: Pakistan played a greater role in democratic process of Afghanistan. Mr. Karazi in presidential chair is result of Pakistan's facilitation of Afghan refugees votes in Pakistan.

He proved to be a liability for us hence no such support for any other liability in coming Afghan election

America is providing a lot of "military aid" across the world and it is expensive for them.

So it is clever for them to offload some of this burden to other countries, such as India.

But in leaving this for India, America is also leaving much "geostrategic influence" that India can benefit from, if they are willing to shoulder the financial burden.

Its called New Dehli's obsession with Pakistan's containment, to me its more like cooking up a huge blow back.

What are state actors and what are non-state actors. And since when india start using cliche' that too invented by zardari.?:woot:

As for aman ki asha...its genenral populate movement and they have no control over govt's games.
As for concessions its for india to offer as its bigger country.

Didn't want to state the obvious for obvious reasons. :)

As for concessions from India - never going to happen for the reason I said before - emotional quotient and Benedict Arnold.

After NATO and usa leaves afg just wait and see how talibans rise to capture each part of afg. Remember there is no Ahmad Shah Masood to lead northern alliance which makes up of almost 70-80% of ana. Our bond with afghan pashtoons are very deep never under estimate them.
You seem ignorant of the fact that the US of A is NOT going to leave a vacuum in Afghanistan after their 'withdrawal'. 30,000 US troops or three divisions worth would be stationed permanently in Afghanistan - Kabul, East and South West.

Afghanistan is strategically and economically too important to be left to the wiles of the Taliban wolves. It is the center of gravity for trade and natural resources that have been estimated to be over a trillion dollars. And the US of A will ensure it always has its hand in the lucrative pie.

We should properly weigh the pros & cons of military assistance to Afghanistan. First, India should be patient till 2014 as three major changes will take place than, in change in govt. in Afghanistan, change in Govt. in India & NATO pullout. If the post-2014 govt. in Afghanistan still believes in friendship with India like Karzai regime, we can consider the proposal. But we should also consider the possibility of Taliban coming into power in Kabul, that way Our weapons will be used against Afghan people only.

Kashmir is just a stick to beat india with.untill either of india or pakistan exists this conflict will go on.

What logic Auntijy. Your stick beating makes small pimples into India while these stick bearers are themselves creating "tod-fod" inside your country daily :coffee:

The US, UK, India and most NATO countries will provide both development and military aid to Afghanistan..no doubt about that.

At no point should we put Indian troops in Afghanistan. India should support the development of Afghanistan , not because it will be a counter weight on the eastern front to Pakistan, but, because, it will provide India a launch pad to Central Asia. A developing Afghanistan, self sufficient via its own troops (supported by India and NATO) and equipment through soft loans that we are not going to directly interfere in regional games.

Development of roads, hospitals and educational institutions is where we should provide majority funding. Create programs where all Afghan children have schools to go to and complete at-least till class 5 and then slowly move it up to class 10 and then graduation, is what we should attempt. Help in developing the rustic environments to a tourist destination via security enforcement by its own troops is what is required.
