"Come to India and you will never be the same again." That's how country's tourism minister KJ Alphonse officially invited Chinese tourists to visit their next door neighbor at an extravagant event in Beijing on Tuesday hosted by India's Tourism Ministry.

The occasion brought together leading tour operators from both sides, providing them with an opportunity to expand their business avenues. The government of India will be conducting similar events in other Chinese cities like Shanghai, Wuhan and Guangzhou this week.

India's 'Chinese' Dream

In 2016, India received about 251,000 Chinese travelers but in 2017 the number dropped to a mere 240,000. Given this backdrop, India has set an ambitious target of increasing this minuscule figure to an eye-popping 14 million by 2023. "We are opening an office in Beijing very soon, we should aim for at least 10 percent of the 144 million Chinese tourists. This can be achieved in five years if we make concerted efforts," said Mr Alphonse.

The appeal of trying to attract more Chinese tourists is an obvious one. A rising tide of Chinese travelers is the biggest phenomenon in the global tourism industry.

From a modest 10 million overseas trips in the year 2000 to an astounding 145 million in 2017, the number of Chinese tourists has skyrocketed in less than two decades. According to the China Outbound Tourism Research Institute, the figure may breach the 400 million mark by the end of 2030. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Chinese globetrotters spent a whopping 261 billion US dollars in 2016, more than twice the amount from US travelers. The most popular destination among Chinese tourists is Thailand followed by Japan, Vietnam and South Korea.

In April, an informal meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Wuhan laid the ground for strengthening cultural ties between the two ancient civilizations through cultural exchanges. While speaking to CGTN, India’s visiting tourism minister stressed that "the best way to get together is to travel."

However, one of the major obstacles in attracting more Chinese tourists is India's safety record. As per India's official records, 382 cases of crimes against foreigners were registered in 2016 alone. India's tourism minister asserts that it's a wrongful portrayal of the country as being dangerous for foreign travelers. But, Serra Wu, a Chinese travel enthusiast who also attended the roadshow in Beijing is not convinced, "I want to see the Taj Mahal but I have heard some real horror stories about India."

Apart from safety, connectivity too remains a big stumbling block. Five Chinese airlines together operate only 42 weekly flights to just three Indian cities, an inadequate number to link the world’s two most populous nations.

There are also only 37 Mandarin speaking authorized guides in India. In reply to CGTN's question on the issue, the minister acknowledged that it’s one of the major hurdles in wooing more Chinese tourists to India.

China's 'Uncle Aamir'

A household sensation in China, Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and his movies like "Dangal" and "3 Idiots" have forged a special cultural bond between the people of the two countries. While, the Indian government says it has no official plans to rope in the actor, "Uncle Aamir" may well turn out to be India's "Secret Superstar" to lead its charm offensive.

Khan's Indian family sport drama "Dangal" became the first Indian movie to enter the list of China's top 20 highest-grossing movies in history, taking home over 285 million US dollars. That's the kind of money the world is aiming at, according to a study conducted by World Tourism Organization, China accounts for 21 percent of international tourism spending. Amidst popular tourist hubs like Thailand, Japan and Singapore vying to lure Chinese travelers, India faces a fierce competition. However, a little help from "Uncle Aamir" may set the Indian tourism counters ringing.

.
I guess Chinese travelers want to be groped and rape by Indians. . Must be their secret fantasy.

Thanks Xi for making Chinese fantasy a reality. I guess Donglang was just a distant memory.

Can u edit the article first? Its so annoying, unbearable n unreadable to my eyes that i stopped reading just a few paragraphs in.

Chinese has no interests to travel to shihole places like india!

Pakistan prefered and india no thanks!

and i am not the only chinese think like this alone!

Why india not favored:
1)India occupied china south tubet territory,an enemy country!
2)raping problem of india!
3)lack of infrastructures!
4)india hostile to chineses!i thought among 140 millions chinese tourists should be 0 to india, well it turned out there are around 270000 to india a number surprised me!should be much less!

. . .
Chinese people are very sensible and easy to mingle.

I have been a host to couple of Chinese people and found them enjoying their stay in India.

They really love to drink.

Though they don't like heavy Indian gravies but they really relish Rotis and Rice and all green vegetables

As long as you don't want get some belly problem, delete India off your tour list. Their food is really unacceptable.

Same for us too. Eating cockroaches, frogs, snakes etc is disastrous!!

Reading these comments, it sounds like you guys want Indians to be hostile/ more hostile towards Chinese. Trolls or hypernationalists.
Cannot help it that the Indians are still occupying Chinese lands, South Tibet.
How do you explain off the aggression by the Indians in trespassing the border in Donglang(Doklam) to stop the Chinese rightfully building a road on their land that the Indians said they are being busybody troublemakers acting on behalf of their puppet enslaved nation, Bhutan.
Maybe you are lucky not to have suffered the obnoxious behavior of Indians.
They have high threshold of tolerance for shame and stink.
That could explain why a large beautiful country, but smelly and filthy, with huge cultural heritage only have 10 million tourist, numbers that compete with tiny Singapore.

India without their downsides could easily be one of the top tourist destinations in the world.
Those who would find India attractive are perhaps people who want to experience being ganged raped, but there would be too few of them.

Real reason is non stop propaganda against India in western media because we took USSR side in cold war.
Rest you can gathered what you are seeking in India.

This is a no-brainer...

Islamabad does not release immigration data but a source in the foreign ministry said about 71,000 Chinese nationals visited in 2016. A senior immigration official added 27,596 visa extensions were granted to Chinese that year, a 41 percent increase on 2015, suggesting more are staying in the country for longer.

...and with the CPEC going ahead, the number of Chinese visiting Pakistan has increased substantially in 2017-18.

Same for us too. Eating cockroaches, frogs, snakes etc is disastrous!!

Most Indian food give me this impression, due to your cooking and dining enviornment. Cockroaches is not in food menu, nowhere in China. You mentioned Chinese food are some individually special, you have to spend many time and efforts in finding them. Most Chinese food are fine cooked and delicacy. There are mainly 8 Cuisines from 8 region/ provinces, which vary to each other from materials, color, favor and taste etc.

.
There are certainly Chinese foods that can considered "weird" or even repulsive. But these aren't as common as some people want to make it seem nor is it unique to China having foods that can be considered revolting by outsiders. There are Chinese people who are friendly and indifferent to India and politics. This is the majority. But there are also hypernationalists on both sides who want to kill each other. Short of that, they feel the need to denigrate each other at every opportunity and exaggerate or make things up to make others look bad. So sad.

Why does this forum have to bring every topic into some disgusting shit flinging contest? This thread has no real ill intent but people (in this case Chinese) feel the need to talk crap, what do you expect as a result from that behaviour you initiated? Give the rest of us some bad reputation and targeted for hate. Outside rational discussions on military equipment (a common enthusiasm we all share) there are various non military topics like this, but the hate really spills over. Either this forum is filled with stupid children or trolls. The quality of Chinese members are quite low (of course there are also good ones who only respond reasonably). I think half of you are just here to talk crap and make Chinese people look horrible.
