Amazon Picks Indian City Of Hyderabad To Set Up Largest Delivery Center Outside Of US

Global e-commerce giant Amazon has announced that it would build its second-largest global delivery center — and the largest outside of the U.S. — in Hyderabad, the capital city of the southern Indian state of Telangana, local media reported Friday. The move came a year after the company said it would build its biggest Indian warehouse near Hyderabad.

A senior government official of Telangana told the Economic Times, a local business newspaper, that the Seattle-based company had been allotted a 10-acre parcel of land for the proposed 2.9 million square-feet delivery center, designed to house 13,500 people. The current headcount at Amazon development centre in Hyderabad is about 1,000 across multiple offices.

Friday’s announcement by the U.S. retailer highlighted growing interest among Silicon Valley giants in Telangana, an erstwhile part of the state of Andhra Pradesh in the Southern part of India. In February, iPhone maker Apple also announced that it would set up its largest technology development center outside the U.S. in Hyderabad. Microsoft and Google also recently detailed plans for building campuses in the city.

Sources cited by local media said that construction on Amazon’s warehouse, also referred to as a “fulfillment centers,” will start on March 30.

Fulfillment centers, often located near airports are used to collect, sort and dispatch customer orders from Amazon as well as third-party vendors, who avail Amazon’s vast warehousing system for a fee.

Amazon currently operates 21 such warehouses over 10 states in India. In 2014, the company had announced $2 billion investment to boost its India operations.

Indian Railway has given permission for the trial run of high speed Talgo trains on two routes, including Delhi-Mumbai section.

The trains manufactured by Spanish firm Talgo will undertake trial runs at speeds between 160 and 200 kmph on the existing tracks on two routes -- a route taken by Rajdhani Express and another non-Rajdhani route.

The Railway Board has given permission for trial on two routes and Talgo will conduct the time validation trial on Delhi-Mumbai corridor soon,

These are not particuarly impressive speeds really.

@patentneer I am glad India is progressing. I have come to the conclusion Pakistan will never get anywhere without India moving forward. In fact it would be better if India is always slightly ahead. The reason is if Pakistan moves ahead too far all it will do is encourage massive illegal migration from Indian Muslims to Pakistan creating even more problems in Karachi and creating bigger slums. So I am happy India is doing good.

That comment about Bangalore's exports is silly. Your just cherrypicking the fruit from 1.3 billion country. And the Jaguar cars - that's great stuff.

This Talgo (photo) is off loaded in Saudi Arabia. Not India.

Gr8 feedback. Correct and to-the-point minus the rhetoric.

Bangalore's example is exemplary. Bangalore is the new India. Future India. The IT exports are that very tip-of-the-iceberg niche where entire countries leap-frog to the next level. Walkman's, Casio/Seiko and Toyotas for Japan. Nailcutters and ships for Korea, Plastic flowers and teddy bears for China, IT for Banglore or call center and consulting for Delhi-Bombay.
  • Bangalore's built a mind-boggling business model around its k-base. And that's what's not happening in Pindi-Isloo or Krunchy-Gwadar. That is phenomenal disparity. Banglore's total exports alone outstrip entire Pak exports is an example of the gap. Others Indian hubs are catching up fast and turning and learning from Bangalore's pole position, are coming up fast and furious. Also, it's all 'good-looking' too:

C'mon, everything in the sub-continent is India Vs. Pakistan so that part is totally plain. A thought. What will Pak. and even more so India do if not for the un-equal Indo-Pak rivalry.

Exactly opposite *** urban planning goes. First you get ppl. then charge for services rendered and taxation takes care of the rest. Indians got mega cities from EU Colonisation, built on the most outlying, outlandish and forsaken crumbs of land grants on the fringes of the crumbling regional Mughal satraps. Bombay scooped out of the sea, Calcutta too. Recent floods in Madras tell the same story. Why they stopped scooping the sea in said cities is a scam in itself but they expanded mani- fold inwards. More money to the city govt.

If India did, it is Frenchie Corbusiers flunkie Chandigarh Stan. Gurdwara's reflect Punjabi architecture. None of that in Chandigarh, Lahore or Islamabad's tony defence areas at all. Delhi recently was justly infamous for it's love of evolutionary 'Punjabi Baroque' arch., thankfully gone now.

100 new smart cities are like the IT Parks posted above. Notice no hawkers, 'drivers', paan-beedi and other Street types. I say build on a priority, the low-to-middle classes, the ones with fire in the belly, are the ones who deserve new functional cities the most because of time Vs.

Delhi Metro's got to be up there topping charts. Mega $ Billions game changer, it's also mega profitable. And getting better and even more profitable by the day. Showpiece JICA project, should be.

Having changed road rage and general violence dynamics on the road, massively affected air pollution, noise, harshness and real-estate linkages, it has changed the very character of Delhi and it's citizenry. Thanks go to JICA to run with their sub sub contractors!

JICA super manages by letting corrupt politicos run with their sub sub subcontractors and their patronage networks. Hats off to JICA.
