Aam aadmi's dream hospital taking shape
The domes and the scaffolding of the massive structure coming up on MG Road in the city, attracts everyone’s attention. This is the new JSS Hospital building. N Niranjan Nikam was privy to the virtual presentation of this huge state-of-the-art edifice. It is something that every Mysorean can be proud of in the days to come, as it is going to be the second largest hospital attached to a medical college in the country, he writes.
As one drives past the JSS Hospital on MG Road, the construction that is coming up right next door catches everyone’s eyes. It is the new hospital being built at a cost of Rs 360 crore on a 11.5 acres land.
The total built-up area will be 12.17 lakh square feet excluding the service building which will be another 2.80 lakh square feet.
The city apart from being a tourist paradise is also becoming a health destination. Many new hospitals are opening its door to cater to the burgeoning population in and around Mysore district.
Suttur seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra who always dreams big realised that the old JSS hospital with 1,100 beds though catering to the poor, needs to upgrade itself.
Thus he decided to put together a team of dedicated people to build a 1800-bed hospital, the second largest in the country attached to a medical college.
What is so unique about this hospital? A common man who enters this hospital for treatment, might initially feel that it is not for him, will soon realise that he will be experiencing world class treatment at affordable costs and that too in almost five star ambience.
Being build on the Indo-Sarcenic architecture style that will be complimenting the heritage structures in the city of palaces, it will have a basement, ground floor plus four floors. Each floor will be 1.2 lakh plinth area.
For the first time in the history of JSS, the colour of the building (usually the sepulchral robe colour) will change and the seer himself has approved of this change.
The colour of the paint that will finally enhance the look of the building is still being experimented, said the director of the JSS New Hospital Project, S Shiva Prasad.
Three blocks
The hospital comprises three blocks, A, B and C. There will be 37 operation theatres in all out of which 24 of them will be in the second floor of which three are modular type, apart from 10 minor OTs and three OBG OTs, said additional medical superintendent Dr C N Mruthyunjayappa.
Five times larger than the old hospital, the construction of which began in August 2008, it will cater to all types of specialties except Oncology.
The added attraction is cosmetology apart from department of dental surgery, said resident medical officer Dr M S Shanthamallappa.
“If a patient enters the hospital, he right now pays just Rs 15 for registration for 12 months. But we will be trying to convince the swamiji to increase it as otherwise it will be difficult for us to maintain the hospital,” Dr Mruthyunjayappa, Shiva Prasad, deputy director hospital project R Umapathaiah and resident engineer K Parashivamurthy in unison told City Herald.
There are 850 camp labourers from Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan who are involved in various sections of construction and the contract work is taken up by Chandralekha Constructions, New Delhi.
Technicaliya Consultant, Chennai are the architects, said Shiva Prasad.
362 ornamental pillars
The best granites and tiles available in the world are being laid. Tamil Nadu architecture style cornices will add grace to the building. In all there will be 362 ornamental pillars all round the hospital.
There will be 18 lifts and 18 staircases, said Dr Mruthyunjayappa.
The hospital matches the Medical Council of India standards and hospital management system is being introduced, added Shiva Prasad. The basement will have four laboratories and four seminar halls. It will also have parking area where 240 cars can be parked. The dimension of the attractive main lobby will be 160ft x 110ft. 22 domes including four big and 18 smaller ones will be adorning the buildings.
The ground floor will consist out-patient department including radiology, the first floor will have general ward with 400 beds, OBG, operation theatres and NICU, the third floor will house all general wards and the fourth floor will have special wards, private, semi-private rooms, library and department office.
Green building
The green building concept is completely incorporated here. Rainwater harvesting, central boiler with solar energy backup, LED systems for lighting darker areas, open to the sky yards for light and air, landscaping inside and outside will all be a part of this most modern hospital said Shiva Prasad.
The Central Sterile Service department is being set up by German engineers and the cost of this will be Rs1.59 crore. The laundry will be by a UK based company and the latest kitchen equipment will be supplied by a Coimbatore-based company, he said.
This huge hospital which is a charitable and not a corporate one, will cater to the patients coming from Hassan, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Mysore districts because of the excellent and cheap medical service and specialized doctors treating them, said Dr Mruthyunjayappa.
