Never mind trolls, re: above comments, I p[posted before and quoted a US think tank type; India's on a tear.
India's 'tryst with destiny' vision meant that development was a primary, long term issue. Not security.
India inherited an awesome Colonial administrative juggernaut. This juggernaut was steered towards India's vision. Processes and institutions were re-aligned. New institutions like the IIT's were set-up to break down the vision into goals. Goals devolved into processes that were broken down baby step-by-step, into action items.
Tata The Next Toyota, Next Hyundai?
Unfortunately, defense and security became priority issues because India's neighbors destablised the neighbourhood.
Up till the 80's defence and security chewed up India's meager resources. Only in the 80's did India launch it's economy because the Pak. bust-up issue had been settled in the early 70's re: Bangladesh.
Back on track, the original vision was targeted. The 90's brought, to give credit where credit is due, PV Narashimha Rao as PM who pumped Dr. MMS
- who took India from bankrupt, begging bowl state to # 3. Pls. no argumentation, this is a fact.
MMS did this despite the burden of an inclusive, social, welfare state which is what India really is. Subsidy state, hand-out state.
Modi takes over when India is Top 10. Modi is a development type. In all candour, the task at hand is less daunting then in PVR Rao+MMS days.
India's development vision was set with the 'tryst of destiny' narrative long yrs. ago, processes and action items got India's there, almost. India was ambushed by the very real, Global cold war which had strong repercussions in the S.Asian 'hood. Said cold war nasty, residual issues continue effing the neighbours, namely Af.-Pak.
It's a long evolving story, earned through sweat, blood and guts. No overnight miracle.
Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg on India
Modi's big on facebook. Facebook Global Delivery Center is in Hyderabad, India.
Sheryl Sandberg, India
Fb Global delivery center is in Hyderabad. Hyderabad alone had core $ 10 Billion IT exports.
That's $ 100 Billion, in PPP terms, never mind Biryani, a $ still goes a long ways in Hyderabad. 1 city alone, Hyderabad, is raking in $ 100 Billion, yr.-on-yr. on IT alone. There's other stuff Hyderabad exports, overseas and continental wide, there are other, more traditional revenue sources, the tax base is young, single market GST roll-out is on the horizon (boom for all India business), agriculture (think tobacco, not rice) is not even taxed. What if they taxed HR export?
Hyderabad's main export must be NRI's. Professional, skilled and semi-skilled types globally, and specially the Gulf over multiple generations. Ok so they make up with remittances ...
Bangalore is another eg.
- "Bangalore, you believe it or not- is going to become the single largest IT cluster on the planet by 2020. We will have 20 lakh IT professionals in one location- namely Bangalore and 60 lakh indirect employment because of that, and $ 40 Billion (Rs four lakh crore exports, or more accurately $ 400 Billion !) by 2020," Srivatsa Krishna, Secretary to Government, Department of IT, BT and S&T Government of Karnataka, told reporters here. -S. Krishna, Secretary to Government, Department of IT, BT and S&T Government of Karnataka, told reporters here.
Sunrise industries. India's pharma biz. story is 1/2 as big as mega IT biz. Add on $ 50 for Hyderabad presently and $ 200 Billion for Bangalore by 2020 and you see mind-boggling riches. Bangalore has traditional monopoly on aerospace, rocket science and material science tech. This is just 1-2-3 'industries', I mean who cares for Hyderabadi zardozi or pearl this-&-that or Bangalore cotton or raw silk - no offense. Same for Pune, which also has traditional strengths in steel, auto, forgings- all boom time stuff; never mind Kolhapuri chappals.
I just realised that India's mega, colonial era cities are rich. Or full of richie-rich's. Retarded, ineffective policies make the city govt.'s poor. Mumbai for eg. is HQ's to Global mega Corp.'s and the world's richest communities like diamond biz. Jains, factory operator Parsis, cloth-to-gas peddlers Ambani's, BKC Marathi bankers, Sindhi gold smugglers, Ismaili bankers, Bhaiyya taxiwallahs, Christian professionals, Punjabdo and Baluchi filmi types, Bihari coolies and dabbawallahs ... yet they all get screwed over by the monsoon. Bombay then. There's Bangalore, Pune, Madras which are clearly rich. Delhi is in the middle of the green revolution country with Punjab on one side and Western U.P on the other. And factories like Maruti and Hero Corp. and Govt., IT, consulting, telecom, traditional N. India retail biz.'z etc. Calcutta has recovered, unlike Karachi, from it's Bangladesh war ghettoisation.
Of all the colonial cities of India which boomed beyond belief but still can't compare with their American, Canadian or Australian or local type Singapore, Dubai, Hong-Kong type counterparts, only Kanpur sticks out as a dirty, smelly, goonish call from the past. I did a quick google on Kanpur and was quite surprised, so moving on then ...
Address to Joint Meeting of US Congress by AB Bajpayee, BJP and Standing Ovation
This is how India leap-frogged from uber developing country to 'super-power' in a decade.
