New Delhi is in talks with Moscow to acquire a number of Russian-made Ilyushin transport aircraft for its Air Force; Izvestia daily reported citing its sources. The total value of the contract could be as much as $2 billion.

The mid-air refueling aircraft would enhance the operational capabilities of the Su-30 fighter jets specially developed for India by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau.
The Indian Air Force is already equipped with Russian-built IL-78 mid-air refuelers.
“For the first time Russia has offered New Delhi its IL-78MD-90A, which is a modernized version of the Il-76MD-90A military transport, also known as the IL-476,"the unnamed source told Izvestia.
Negotiations with Russia follow India’s decision not to buy six Airbus 330 MRTT (multi-role tanker transport) due to the high cost. Airbus won the delivery tender in 2015, but last week the Indian government withdrew the tender.
“The main reason for the cancellation of the tender is the very high life-cycle cost which was not calculated properly in the beginning,”the Financial Express cited the government’s letter to Airbus.

This is an upgrade deal, no new IL-76/78 are being looked at as of now.

This is a blatent lie, the A330 MRTT had a far lower LCC than the IL-78MKI.

According to Prasun K. Sengupta, this is what will happen to our Candid/Midas fleet -

" Consequently, the MoD has now scrapped plans for procuring the 10 A330-220 MRTTs, and instead, by this October is expected to ink a contract with Rosoboronexport under which the IAF’s existing six IL-78MKI aerial refuelling tankers will be upgraded and refurbished to IL-78MKI-90 MRTT standard, another six of the IAF’s existing IL-76MD transport aircraft will be converted into IL-78MKI-90 MRTTs, while the remaining 18 IL-76MDs will be upgraded to IL-76MD-90 standard.

The upgrade component will include re-engining with PS-90A turbofans, and incorporation of glass cockpit avionics. The entire upgrade/refurbishment work will be undertaken by CJSC ‘Aviastar-SP (Ulyanovsk Aviation Industrial Complex), located on the left bank of Volga River in Russia’s Ulyanovsk region. "

As per this, we're not getting any new Il-76/78 airframes...we will just convert a few Il-76s into Il-78 MRTTs, and upgrade the entire 76/78 fleet to the latest standards with PS-90A engines.
