India completes propulsion system design of its new cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’

I think a lot of people would sleep better if BrahMos was longer range -- though it cannot be because of treaties Russia has signed. (relating specifically to operational range) That does not mean that India cannot use what they learned through the BrahMos development (including the BrahMos 2 development) to make an entirely new cruise missile with longer range.

I think all advances should be cumulative. That is that what scientists learn from different projects should be joined together and used to improve future projects.

Obviously BrahMos is impressive in its speed, guidance and manuvering. It lacks in distance, and potentially, punch. Other missile tests give other benefits to future missile designs. Together they could be used to create longer ranged cruise missiles that still have good speed, guidance and so forth.

Whatever missile this would be called (def. not BrahMos as that name limits the missiles' characteristics to certain perameters by international law) could be a solution to a number of problems. I just don't think that it would be cheap.

Looks like it has some German V-1 characteristics. Curious though as big as it is. And as slow as it is for an anti-ship missile (1,100kph). don't you think this missile which is based on old technology. Would be easy to shoot down?

It does not strike me as a 'first strike' type of weapon at all. (specifically its' speed) Perhaps it is designed to target low-tech units that may not have top of the line anti-missile defense capability? With a range approaching 1000 km you'd probably want it to be able to hit its intended target. Perhaps this is, itself, an incrimental step where the first batch is an exercise in gaining experience; and the sucessive attempts will construct better capable missiles. (e.g Agni series)

I guess the scients not telling the exact range of Nirbhay.

Nirbhay is a low cost, higher range missile. But it would be better if we get 2000 km Nirbhay and 1000 km Brahmos. Brahmos is costlier but it is unique and can not be destroyed by enemy air defence (as of now and next future).

Not true the evolved sea sparrow can down the brahmos.

These subsonic cruise missiles are always easy to shoot down. Akash, SPYDER or future SR-SAM can easily destroy such missiles. Actually these SAMs are tested with PTA/UAV just like subsonic cruise missiles. It can be done at longer ranges when backed up with AEROSTAT. But supersonic missile is another game all together.

I am not going into debate that how ESSM is capable of destroying a tri-sonic stealthy low flying cruise missile.

But I ask you a question, Does China or Pakistan have ESSM? :P

No they do not. But if Pakistan made a request they could probably get it.

lol

There is not 'If' here. India have the Brahmos that is the reality. Now when Pakistan will request it and when the US Congress/Pentagon will approve it that is another matter. Did you got any indication that Pakistan requested for ESSM? If NO than we can stop thinking about imaginary weapons.

Aselsan and Roketsan working on the Development of short and medium Range VL Air Defence Missiles, it is possible that a Naval Variant of the Short and medium Range AD Missles would also develope'd. Are these Missiles deployed on Naval Platforms they are able to engage Brahmos.

Pakistan requested 6 Guided missile frigates. Which in 2008 the U.S. congress approved. In August of this year the first one U.S.S McInerney will be deactivated and transferred to the Pakistani Navy. It will also go through a 65 million dollar upgrade to enhance it's anti submarine warfare and air defense capability. Since evolved sea sparrow is the standard in anti missile/air defense for the navy. I would wager it will come with it.

Here is another link to a older post about the Pakistan Navy request

"The weapons and systems on the PN FFG-7 have not yet been disclosed, but they could include the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System for the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) as well as Mk 32 torpedo tubes for Mk 46 Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) torpedoes."

"he said when asked to compare Indian BMD programme with that of China, which carried out its first test-firing on January 14."
DRDO chief knew nothing, this test is not the first, after US declare to sell weapon to Taiwan, then we made this test, before this we test this system at least 20 times. The DRDO chief only to hear this first time .
second, now no one knows :which missile we use in this test? Then how did the DRDO chief compare? As:you don't know how tall the man besides you,you can't compare.

We are lucky because this man work for DRDO~~~that's why ajun and LCA delayed so long

One should better to ignore if he cannot contribute.

The missile we are talking about is below

But Supersonic Brahmos Cruise Missile not only has Ship, Submarine but also Land launched, Land attack variant

How, you will countered it on land.

Brahmos will be Hypersonic by 2012. Do you have any answer for that?

Then there is Air launched, Land attack variant how Pakistan will counter it. And remember it will also have hypersonic air to land attack version.

Also don't forget that the US toys are costly and required in very very large numbers for air defense. Then also their is no full proof air defense guarantee.

On the other hand India will have 3 tier anti-ballistic missile, SPYDER air defense system, Akash etc. etc.

If u r talking about from the Pakistani Navy's air defense point of view. Then u should know that Pakistani navy is a very weak and small navy.

They don't have many ships to protect and put expensive air defense on them. Even which can not save them from Hypersonic Brahmos Cruise missile. ESSM type of Air defense is the need of bigger and stronger navies. But, ESSM can't counter hypersonic missiles like Brahmos.

That's given that Pakistan gets its hands on some of weapons that US gives to its principal allies/client states.
