NEW DELHI, February 6. /TASS/. India has cancelled its international tender on medium-lift military transport aircraft. The country will instead purchase Multi-Role Transport Aircraft (MTA) designed and being manufactured jointly by India and Russia, a spokesperson for India’s Defense Ministry told TASS on Friday.

He said India did not find the proposal of participants in the tender for supplying 56 aircraft worth $3 billion satisfactory. "As a result, the Defense Ministry not only declined the deal, but also cancelled the tender altogether," the spokesperson noted.

The Indian Air Force has also "reconsidered priorities in replenishing its fleet," he said. "We want to purchase multipurpose transport aircraft of the new generation - MTA. This ambitious project is being developed jointly by Russia’s United Aircraft Corporation and India’s Hindustan Aeronautics. We expect to sign the final agreement soon," the spokesperson added.

The agreement on developing a military transport aircraft with a 20-ton payload for the Air Forces of Russia and India was signed in September 2010. The sides are investing $300 million each in the project. India plans to acquire 45 aircraft, Russia will purchase around 100.

MTA will have 2 turbofan engines and maximum takeoff weight of 65 tons. The cruising speed of the aircraft will stand at 800 km/h.

So rather than going for an already proven system like the A330 MRT today, they are going for developing a new version?? How does that help if India wants a tanker fleet today?

That is main reason.Besides it wouldbe a new gen system.

It makes sense.. isnt it? already the tata being single bidder in the tender, there was no point continuing to either cancel or refloat the tender. Just precious waste of time.

In the meantime the MTA plan works well.

Add to that few goodies - likely follow on orders

The transport fleet additions will definitely reduce pressure on our ageing fleet. and MTA would do the necessary once inducted.

All in all a very good decision.

Where did you see anything about AARs? The IAF is still going to get the A330 MRTT, the MTA standards for MultiRole Transport Aircraft and is intended to replace the IAF's An-132s and now their Avros. Nothing to do with tankers.

This is an outdated figure, to replace the 50+ Avros and 100+ An-132s the IAF is going to need MUCH more than 45, they are surely looking at 150-200+

Hmmm, it would be a good decision if the MTA was being test flown as we speak and it was clear the MTA was set to be a success. To date it is still a paper plane and taking decisions like this based on promised specifications is bold to say the least. i hope this works out BUT it could end in tears.

The C-295 on the other hand is a proven machine AND the tie up with Tata would have brought a lot of industrial benefits to the private sector in India, as it stands the production of the MTA is another HAL monopoly.

WE can wait till MTA happens. Better to come to conclusion rather than dragging our legs for the next 2 years and then wait for another 3-5 years for the aircraft. Anyway it might had taken another 5 years to manufacture the ac. It will helps to push for faster funds for MTA. Which is supposed to have greater capability with full TOT .

Selected as a co-development yes, but mainly to replace the An 32 and the contracts are not fixed yet and keep in mind that the source of the opening article is a Russian media report. :)

This bit is interesting. If i recall correctly, the tender was for private Indian companies to form JV and produce aircraft. Now if the news is correct, govt. in one stroke has killed any chance of private industry participation benefitting HAL (again).
Also as @Abingdonboy boy has said in one post, if India is looking at this as possible replacement candidate for AVRO and Clines, the order shall easily be in vicinity of 150+ and that begs a question, if HAL is prepared for such a large order execution. Private industry on the other hand would benefit hugely if such a large order is executed by a single vendor or shared between multiple parties.
Also there is absolutely no news on Indian channels thus far on this announcement.

Hilarious isn't it? :) They simply couldn't attract more privat industry vendors to participate, the same problem that the former MoD faced too and instead of getting the best possible deal with the only JV that came forward (which imo was the best offer in the tender anyway), Parrikar seems to have a different idea. The idea is completely contrary to the aim of the IAF, the MoD and even the PM's Make in India agenda, but does have some sense in it, because Parrikar seems to think about making IAF more efficient as a whole, by using just one type of airfraft, similar to his ideas about MKIs for MMRCA.
I don't think he is doing the right thing, but one have to give it to him, that he is developing is own ideas to improve things, beyond party politics. But this is not a done deal, lets see what the PM says about it.
