India, Brazil and Vietnam are the potential buyers of Mistral-class amphibious assault ships, which France has refused to deliver to Russia, Head of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies Ruslan Pukhov told TASS on Thursday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Francois Hollande on Wednesday achieved agreement on terminating the contract for the delivery of two helicopter carriers of the Mistral class, concluded in the summer of 2011.

As the Kremlin said, the two leaders agreed that Russia would get a compensation for the money paid under the contract, and France would return Russian equipment and materials. After that France will be free to use the ships at its sole discretion.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has said some countries have already displayed their interest in Mistrals.

"Ships are normally built to order. That is why, this will be a unique case and we’ll all see how this soap opera will end," the expert said.

"It is logical to presume that the French will offer these ships to the countries, which planned to have this type of vessels under their naval program, or sell these ships at a reduced price to the countries traditionally buying used French hardware," Pukhov said.

India may be among the potential buyers, Pukhov said.

"The first country is India, which has expressed its desire to buy one ship and build three more ships of this type at its shipyards, and, as far as I know, the French would want us to assist them in this," the expert said.

The Mistral helicopter carriers may also be of interest to Vietnam where "economic growth is observed," Pukhov said.

"Brazil is the third country. They [Brazilians] hypothetically could consider the purchase of such a ship on condition the French give a good price," the expert said.

The Mistral amphibious assault ships may also be given to the French Navy, which already has three helicopter carriers of this class, Pukhov said.

"The French Navy does not have sufficient money for this. The Navy commander has already made a statement that the Navy no longer needs Mistrals. But if the French fail to sell them, it is quite possible that they will be able to force their Navy to buy these ships," the expert said.

France says there will be no weapons sales to China, following earlier speculation that France might consider selling two Mistral-class amphibious assault ships to Beijing.

France Says Will Not Sell Weapons to China

Why bring China into this? We already have Type 071 LPD,so many Type 072s and Zubrs, buying Mistral is a waste of money.

Big one they won't sell, that's why china always buy small things, like helicopter, anti air missle, submarine eigine, ship eigine, helicopetr loading assistant system, tank eigine, and so on :)

Mistral helicopter carriers is too small for china, china have already 20000T Type 071 LPD, now china want some thing bigger, like 30000T Type 081.

Lol india is going for 40,000 tonnes LHDs
Mistrals will have to do major re design if they are eager to sale.

Wow, I can't believe reuters reported those sarcastic jibes with a straight face. The Russian spokesperson was telling a joke and poking fun at France for losing huge contractual profits. At bit like backing out of an agreement to buy a car and saying, "don't worry, I hear the Martians are interested ;)"

If the ships alone were a real prize, you would see Japan or even Canada pounce on them. But actually, they're worthless without the ancillary benefits. What Russia really wanted was tech transfer, French contribution to developing Ka-52K and investment in St. Petersburg shipyards (via DCNS). And they got all they wanted.

800m each is too much for Vietnam. Even if they buy it, it will be too much of a technological leap. Vietnam lacks the attack helicopters and operational experience as well.

India is a bit better than Vietnam

Brazil not quite sure.

Best candidates are surely Canada and Australia, countries with similar naval doctrine as France.

Okay, we may buy if France sell it on Credit plus full training for us :pop:

Australia are better off with Canberra class LHD. That put Australian out. Canadian has their own plan. The French are doomed.

I hope Vietnam can buy it and bankrupt its military budget. :D

India and Vietnam may be interested in the Mistral-class amphibious assault ships, which France has refused to deliver to Russia, Ruslan Pukhov, Head of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies told TASS.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Francois Hollande agreedto terminate the contract for the delivery of two helicopter carriers of the Mistral class, concluded in the summer of 2011.

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian has recently hinted that some countries have already displayed interest in the Mistrals.

“It is logical to presume that the French will offer these ships to the countries, which planned to have this type of vessels under their naval program, or sell these ships at a reduced price to the countries traditionally buying used French hardware,” Pukhov told TASS.

“The first country is India, which has expressed its desire to buy one ship and build three more ships of this type at its shipyards, and, as far as I know, the French would want us to assist them in this,” he added.

The Indian Ministry of Defense refused to comment on the TASS report. Sources close to the ministry told RBTH that it would be too soon for the country to explore a deal for the Mistrals since India and France are still finalizing the sale of Rafale aircrafts to the Indian Air Force. “Both countries dragged their feet on a tender which a French company won, and a compromise was reached very recently…The countries are still in talks over licensing and technology transfer issues,” the official said.

The Mistral helicopter carriers may also be of interest to Vietnam Pukhov told TASS.

Nguyen Phu Loan, a defense analyst based in Hanoi told RBTH that Vietnam would not pursue a deal without consulting Russia. “We have to understand that the establishment does not want to upset Russia, which is Vietnam’s largest arms supplier,” he said, adding that China may also be interested in buying the Mistrals. “The Mistrals issue would figure in the foreign ministry consultations between Vietnam and France in Paris this year,” Loan added. The Vietnamese Defense Ministry could not be immediately reached for comment by RBTH.
