Bigger and better, its a GLOBAL VILLAGE
With soft launch of Commonwealth Games Village on Thursday, OC has something to cheer about. The delegates and other visitors gave it an instant thumbs-up, savoured the food

Bigger and better. That was the consensus as delegates from participating countries of the Commonwealth Games walked through the Games Village. As Chris Jenkins, chef de mission of Wales, which is coming with a 250-member strong team, said, The Delhi Games Village is unusual, in that its highend and luxurious... this is not the normal Village we have seen till now, not even in the Melbourne Games.
The statement would have been music to the organising committees (OC) ears, which has been facing flak for its tardy preparations. Thursdays unveiling of the Village, however, was the best advertisement for the Delhi Games till date. The detailing that has gone into readying the Village was apparent on the premises, especially in the training and international zones. At the latter, shops were being set up for visiting athletes and delegates a Shahnaz Husain salon nestling close to a Nirulas ice-cream outlet. A senior OC official said: Shops of other brands will also be set up here for the convenience of athletes.
The training zone, with the imposing swimming pool under a futuristic canopy, has a state-of-theart gym and other facilities which look ready for use. As one walks along the international zone, the green area consisting of separate flowerbeds from every country in the Commonwealth Games Federation gives a colourful touch to the premises, with the transport mall standing nearby. Across the road, the dining hall which can seat over 2,200 people at one go, is evidently the pride of the Village. Jenkins said: Food was the first thing we checked after arriving on Wednesday, as athletes eat a lot!
Its not just the kitchen that looks impressive. With athletes expected to arrive from September 23, the residential area of the Village complex has is being done up. While most towers are ready, last-minute work continues in around a dozen of the 34 towers, a fact attested by the delegates present. While the advance teams from New Zealand and Wales have asked for their apartments to be fully fitted out, the other teams from Australia, England and Scotland are in the midst of checking the rooms allotted. The advance teams will be setting up their offices as well as medical and physiotherapy areas soon.
Suresh Kalmadi, chairperson, OC, said: While we are putting up delegates in Hotel Ashoka at present, teams are expected to move into the Village in a few days. Expectedly, security is tight in the Village, going through several layers.
Thursdays unveiling of the Village saw the LG, Tejinder Khanna, who has been taking special interest in the construction of the venue, read out an all-faith prayer. Also present at the occasion were Mike Hooper, CEO, CGF and VK Malhotra, OC executive board member.
