Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) CEO Mike Hooper, on Thursday, gave full marks to the Commonwealth Games Village in the Capital and said that the village is better than the Games Village of Beijing Olympics.

“We are happy to see the Games Village and the facilities provided here. It is not fair to compare it with other games village but I think that the Delhi Games Village is better than that of Beijing,” said Hooper on the formal opening of Games Village on Thursday.

Hooper also praised Delhi Government, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee (OC) and other agencies for their efforts in providing fantastic infrastructure at the stadiums, Games Village and the city as well.

“The Games Village is looking magnificent and it could easily be among the best games village ever. Delhi as a city has also transformed a lot for the Games and the Delhi Government and other agencies should be applauded for this. Delhi has presented itself in a much better way for the Games,” said the CEO of CGF. He added that everything is looking perfect at the Games Village and even the stadiums are all set to host the biggest ever CWG. Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Tejendra Khanna, OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi, senior vice-president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Vijay Kumar Malhotra, OC vice-chairman Randhir Singh and OC secretary general Lalit Bhanot were present at the formal opening of the Games Village. Major (Retd) Dalbir Singh has been appointed as the mayor of the Games Village.

Hailing the facilities provided at Games Village, Hooper said that it has world-class facilities and infrastructure. “Training area for the athletes in the village is one of the most important features of the Games Village. Nowhere in the world athletes are provided with the training facility on the village premises. Moreover, the international zone, dining area and other facilities provided here are better than that of the Games Village at Beijing,” said Hooper.

The residential flats for the athletes, officials and delegates are fantastic and if compared with other games villages, it is one of the best in the world, he added.

The formal opening of the Games Village started with religious rituals, with priests from almost all religions praying for successful Games. OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi said that athletes and delegates will come to the Games Village from September 23. “This is one of the best games village and we are pleased that we are providing all the worldclass facilities here. Athletes, delegates and officials will start coming from September 23. We will have a lot of athletes coming on September 23, 24 and 25 and they will continue to come till October 2,” said the OC chairman.

The residential area of Games Village has 34 towers and interiors have been designed keeping in mind the traditions of the participating countries in the mega sporting events. There are total of 1,168 flats, with 4,008 bedrooms, consisting of two to five bedroom flats. According to the OC officials, there are four to six flats on each floors and building consists of seven to nine floors depending on their area. Two athletes or officials will reside in each room of the village. Over 8,000 athletes and officials from 71 countries will experience a home away from their homes at the Games Village, said an OC official. The main dining hall, with a seating capacity of 2,300, will cater to the food requirement of the athletes and officials, dishing out approximately 22,000 meals daily.
