Community feast along with the chiefs of tribal sects in the district on Friday.

As many as 10 chieftains of various tribes, including the Paniyas, Kurichyas, Mullakurumas, Kattunaykkas, Adiyas, and Oorali Kurumas from different parts of the district, were invited to a special venue here as a part of the programme and various issues being faced by them in their settlements were discussed.

The majority of the grievances were related to basic infrastructure issues such as dearth of roads to their settlements, uncompleted house works, and lack of drinking water and toilet facilities.

“This interaction would not be a single-day process as there are more than 4,000 tribal hamlets in the district and each one has its own issues,” Mr. Suhas said adding that he was planning to invite 10 tribal chieftains every month and solve their issues after an interaction with them.

Maha Navaratri celebrations will begin at the famous Sri Mookambika Temple at Kollur in Udupi district on Thursday.

The “Chandika Yaga” would be performed on the “Mahanavami” festival at 11.30 a.m. on September 29, while the “Rathotsava” will be held at 8.45 p.m. the same evening.

An attraction of the Vijayadasami festival on September 30 is the Vidyarambha ceremony, which will begin at the Saraswati Mandira in the temple from 4 a.m. During the “Vidyarambha” ceremony, the symbol “Om” is written on the tongue of children, aged between two and three, with a turmeric twig.

The Vijayotsava would be held at 5.30 p.m. on the same evening. During the Vijayotasva, “utsavamurthy” (idol taken out during procession) of Goddess Mookambika will be carried to the “Shukla Tirtha”, a kilometre from Kollur, and brought back. The goddess will be decorated in different styles on each day of the Navaratri.

Maha Navaratri would also be celebrated at the Kadiyali Mahishamardini Temple, Janardhana and Mahakali temples, and Durga temples in the district.

Noted poet and Nadoja K.S. Nisar Ahmed inaugurated the 10-day celebrations by showering flower petals on the “utsava murti” – the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari - placed in a silver chariot on the temple premises.

Recalling the history of Dasara under Vijayanagar rulers and the Wadiyars, the ‘Nityoysava’ poet said Dasara is one festival that is celebrated by the people of all faith. It’s a common man’s festival. What’s unique about Mysuru Dasara is that it is celebrated by the government. “I consider today’s Dasara moment as the most memorable day in my life.”

The nine-day Brahmotsavams of Tirumala Venkateswara began with the Dhwajarohanam –the divine flag hoisting ceremony in Tirumala on Saturday.

Being the noble, dedicated and devoted follower of Lord Venkateswara, Garuda who is known as “Garudalwar” in Agama jargon takes the divine responsibility of inviting all deities. The image of Lord Garuda on the holy flag is hoisted on the temple pillar amidst the chanting of Vedic hymns by archakas and Veda pundits thus marking the beginning of the religious ceremony of the Lord of Seven Hills.

The Lord Malayappa Swamy as Lord Sri Krishna took an elegant ride on the five hooded serpent King Chinna Sesha Vahanam.

Samudra Madhanam episode, when the deities and demons were churning the milk ocean for divine nectar, they used Serpent Vasuki as rope. By taking a ride on this vehicle, the Lord enlightens pilgrims, that in spite of his mightiness, Vasuki Naga remained humble and patient for a good cause while Devatas and Asuras were churning the milk ocean using him as rope.

On the third day of the Brahmotsavams on Monday, the processional deity of Lord Malayappaswamy was paraded in a grand procession on the golden Simha Vahanam.

the priests ceremoniously carried out the ‘Snapana Thirumanjanam’ to the deities at the Ranganayakula mandapam inside the hill temple. The deities as is the procedure were seated atop a high golden altar and were given bath with panchamrutam, coconut water and chandanam. Later the authorities also organised unjal seva to the deities at the unjal mandapam outside the main temple complex.

The processional deity, Lord Malayappa Swamy, flanked on either side by His two divine consorts, was carried in a grand procession around the mada streets of the hill temple atop the golden ‘Kalpavriksha (Tree of boons) Vahanam’.

Other heavenly objects like Kamadhenu and Chintamani also formed part of the assemblage atop the bespangled ‘vahanam.’

the celestial tree — Kalpavriksha — is a divine component that had surfaced during the churning of the milky ocean (Ksheera Sagaram) even before the inception of the universe. Later in the afternoon for the third consecutive day, the ‘Snapana Thirumanjanam’ was observed to the deities inside the temple.
