Funny how people donate kilos of god to temples but nothing to the kids sleeping outside in India.

Who told you that people do not do anything for kids sleeping on foot path?

Most philanthropic works are done by temples. Temple feeds millions of people. You can go there sit and have lunch or dinner.

The temple was rebuilt every time with the reconstructive spirit of the people. The modern temple was reconstructed with the resolve of Sardar Patel who visited the ruins of Somnath temple on November 13 1947. Then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, did the Pran-Pratistha at the existing temple on 11 May 1951.

"For centuries, we have played Holi with the orange colour extracted from the mur pungar (Gondi word for motuku flowers),” said Pendur Bhagwant Rao, headman or patel of Samaka village in Indervelli mandal. “We want to continue the tradition as long as we can,” he added as he alluded towards the steadily decreasing number of palash trees.

For the Gond and Kolam ethnic people, extraction of ‘raggal rang’ or red colour becomes a leisure-time activity as they have less work in agriculture fields. Ugadi festival comes after 15 days of Holi and that’s when farmers get busy with preparations for kharif.

Between the ninth and 14th centuries, the ancient site of Tipruru, now Aratipura, surrounded by the Kanakagiri hills, had been one of the most important Jain religious complexes in this part of Karnataka and even the whole of South India. Twelve Jain Basadis (temples), Maths (monasteries), edicts, idols of Tirthankaras and Lanchanas, and sculptures of Kubera, Ambika, Chamara bearers and Dwarapalakas have revealed themselves here — the artefacts of the Ganga and Hoyasala dynasties that ruled this region.

Boundless and bare: The lone and uneven sands stretch far away on the Kanakagiri hillock at Aratipura. The riches include Jain Basadis, Maths, edicts, idols of Tirthankaras and Lanchanas, and sculptures of Kubera, Ambika, Chamara bearers and Dwarapalakas — the artefacts of the Ganga and Hoyasala dynasties.

Vintage value: A 2.2-metre Bahubali sculpture on Shravana Betta just a kilometre from the Kanakagiri hills. The statue predates the statuesque Bahubali at Sravanabelagola.

Half sunk a shattered visage lies ... As Aratipura reveals its ancient secrets, the village in Mandya district of Karnataka turns back the clock into being a living, breathing seat of Jain architecture of South India.

With a population of 65 per cent Muslims, Deoband is home to one of the earliest Islamic revivalist movements in India.

“Deoband is just a perception as this town is always famous as Dev Vrand only. We have Mahabharat’s Rankhandi here and the five Pandavas have worshiped here in Dev Vrand. Even the village named as Jarwala is actually Yakshawala and is the same place where ‘Yaksha’ has questioned Yudhisthir.”

The Deobandi movement began a decade after the 1857 revolt against the British colonial rule in India. Founded by Islamic scholar Shah Waliullah Dehlawi, the movement was based on the rationale that the downfall of the Mughal empire was a punishment meted out to the Muslim community for having strayed from the true path of Islam. The religious seminary created by the founders of the movement, Darul Uloom Deoband, located in Deoband, propagates Islamic science and jurisprudence.

VRL Travels, a Bengaluru-based private bus operator, has been successfully using sensors on most of its fleet for the past five years. These sensors can detect obstacles 40 metres ahead to automatically slow down and stop, and thereby avoid the prospect of a collision.

“The sensor activates the brakes, when it finds any obstacle and slows down giving jerks so that the driver can activate the danger signal to warn other vehicles coming behind of the impending danger.”

“A small device is also attached to the steering wheel and the driver has to constantly feel it. If he doesn’t, the sensor suspects that he is dozing off and the vehicle doesn’t pick up speed even the accelerator is pressed.”

other bus operators are not going for it as the diesel consumption goes up by 5-8 litres for every 100 km.
