In an irony of ironies: the Statue of Unity will be "Made In China"--Times Of India

Well, if the Chinese company can do it cheaper even with the overseas transportation, Indian companies really need to think about their competitiveness.

that's actually a common thing all over, in mexico little statues of mother maria can be made and shipped to mexico from china, cheaper than to make the same statue in mexico and ship it 50 miles down the road. it's the power of a well oiled export machine, world leading internal infrastructure and the vast volumes of ships heading that out already anyhow allows smaller orders or non-priority orders to be used to fill any remaining space for extremely cheap prices.

Spending 300 million on f**king statute which probably won't contribute anything to economy ,what a waste of taxpayer money by this sadhus government

it contributes to the chinese economy, so there's that lol.

.
It was contracted to L&T ............. L&T subcontracted to the Chinese. LOL.

There should have been a clauses that insisted on make in India. Corporate will always look for quick gain and bigger profit.

Next time, if someone you know cursing "Made In China", make sure to tell them, it is not really China's fault. It is Indian businessmen who want to buy the cheapest possible products. You get what you pay for. :cheesy:

How is it not china's fault ? compromising quality to make profit is not a problem ? ...... I agree you get what you pay for. which is why no many people opt for chinese goods.

This is indeed a sad story! Just wondering can't it be made in India?
It was given to an Indian Company - L&T which subcontracted it to a Chinese foundry. This was probably due to the fact that the Chinese company has the necessary skills and expertise in this particular field.

I don't find anything wrong with this. We need to keep our petty politics aside.

We have a robust trade of $70 billion with China and slated to reach $100 billion by 2018-2020. Thus, with the same logic we should also stop all trade with China!!

China-wary Sardar’s statue being made in Nanchang
TNN | Oct 18, 2015, 01.03AM IST

GANDHINAGAR: In an irony of ironies, the world's tallest statue — the Statue of Unity— is being smelted and cast in China's Nanchang province. This not only goes against the central government's 'Make in India' campaign but is also the last thing that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel would have wanted. And evidence for this can be found in history.

The 182-metre-tall memorial statue of Sardar Patel will be installed on Sadhu Bet near Sardar Sarovar dam and has been given a 'National Project' status.

In November 7, 1950, a month before he died, Sardar wrote a confidential letter marked 'strictly personal' to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru warning him of China — he was highly critical of Chinese diplomacy. In this letter to Nehru, Sardar says: "...even though as we (India) regard ourselves as friends of China, the Chinese do not regard us as their friends. With the communist mentality of "whoever is not with them being against them," this is a significant pointer, of which we have to take due note...."

Sardar was speaking in the context of India being used by the Chinese as a "stooge" in their handling of Anglo-American diplomacy in Tibet and in gathering support for their entry into the UN.

Sardar Patel further says in the letter: "China continues to regard us with suspicion and the whole psychology is of, at least outwardly, skepticism...." Sardar then warns Nehru of Chinese military and intelligence appreciation and China's "threat to India, both on the frontier and to internal security". This letter forms part of the crucial Indian Constitution documents compiled by KM Munshi, a member of the constitution committee.

The work of building the statue has been sub-contracted by L&T to the world's largest foundry in China — the Jiangxi Toqine Metal Handicrafts Co Ltd — despite the fact that India has 4,600 foundry units that employ 5 lakh people. Statistics of the Institute of Indian Foundrymen indicate that India is second only to China in the world in the number of foundries it has and their workforce.

K Srinivas, member-secretary of the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET), the nodal agency that works under the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL), told TOI that they have not outsourced the construction of Sardar's statue.

"As it's a project of international importance, the company might have opted for a global supplier. Only bronze-plating will be done in China,'' said Srinivas.

Anil Ram Sutar, son of leading sculptor artist who is working for the Gujarat government in designing the Statue Of Unity said: "We have prepared a 30-feet model of the statue to be installed at Gandhinagar and for managing the modelling and artwork for the whole project."

Manish Doshi, Gujarat Congress spokesperson, said the Modi government spends crores of rupees on the Make in India campaign. "Yet it has allowed Sardar Patel's statue to be cast by a Chinese company when Indian foundries employ 5 lakh people,'' said Doshi.

But this is not a regular product, and the sentiment of Indian people should have been taken into consideration. People are mad in congress.

. . .
This is fine as long as Chinese keep quality in mind.

I hope L&T keeps a watchful eye on these Chinese all the way through the process.

The ONLY purpose to this statue was to inspire India and, restore pride and to circulate money within India while building it.

Both the purpose has been diluted by outsourcing this to China.

You have to call a Spade a Spade.

It is a very tall statue. You need rather good metallurgical and manufacturing technology to cast and make sure it stays in one piece. It is similar to technologies for manufacturing giant wind turbine glades, ship hulls, etc. There are actually surprisingly few country that can do it.

India has decent ship building industries too. More likely a profit driven decision. Either way, this is a slap on the face of "Make In India" .

Chinese product's quality heavily depend on how much you pay for them. If you wish the statue to last, the company need to pay the adequate amount instead of the minimum.
