Death isn't the problem, that's inevitable - it's the slow painful prolonged process of dying that will replace life which people will find uncomfortable.
You shouldn't hide behind the population not having enough education to understand the environment. Whenever it floods go ask the victims if they understand how clearing forests and soil erosion participated to that - they'll understand, even if they don't - they will sit and listen.
Whenever people are wating for days for water trucks to arrive, spend some time with them and ask them if they understand how preserving water could help their situation.
Whenever people sit around on the baked soil waiting for rain as their crops die, ask them if they understand how more trees would help - they will understand.
