Imran Khan’s awkward moment in Beijing

Imran Khan is currently on his first official visit to China after taking oath as Pakistan’s Prime Minister in August. The high profile visit was partially overshadowed by the Tehreek-e-Labbayk Pakistan protests across the country over the acquittal of Aasia Bibi from the Supreme Court in a blasphemy case.

The big news from Beijing is that Chinese government has promised to ‘provide necessary assistance to Pakistan … but more talks are needed‘. At the same time, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister told the media after PM’s meeting with his Chinese counterpart that there were no plans to ‘scale back the CPEC’.

However, the body language of the Pakistani premier in the footage released to the Chinese media officially was intriguing. It was an unfamiliar spectacle for a Pakistani Prime Minister looking weary.

But Naya Daur has received a piece of information that could well be the reason of PM’s fatigued outlook in what has traditionally been the most friendly capital for Pakistani PMs in the world.

According to well-placed sources within Chinese media, the Chinese officials gathered all the statements of Imran Khan and his senior cabinet members about the problems with China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and showed them to him in a high profile meeting.

The Pakistani PM was then asked to be careful about such statements in future and was also told to rein in his ministers on the subject.

In the official communique issued to the media after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s meeting with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Yi especially mentioned that the officials on both sides should be careful about matters of significance, as reported by Chinese media.

Earlier, Imran was received at his arrival in China by the Chinese Transportation Minister – a move that was also taken as a snub by many back home.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistani cabinet members have repeatedly voiced their concerns about the contracts awarded to Chinese companies in the past. PM’s adviser on Commerce and Industries Abdul Razzak Dawood had also stated in an interview with Financial Times that ‘the previous government had done a bad job at negotiating with China on CPEC’. He went on to add that Chinese companies were getting all the tax breaks while Pakistan companies were disadvantaged. “I think we should put everything on hold for a year so we can get our act together,” he added. “Perhaps we can stretch CPEC out over another five years or so.”

CPEC is worth 62 billion dollars. It is China’s biggest investment in any country and is considered pivotal to its Belt and Road Initiative. Pakistani officials’ careless statements about some of the projects under CPEC have previously drawn attention of the Chinese officials and the recent developments also confirm that all isn’t well with the ‘all weather friend’ right now.

However, PM’s visit is expected to bridge the communication gap and with the assistance of a seasoned diplomat and politician Shah Mehmood Qureshi as his foreign minister, Imran Khan should certainly be able to address the concerns of the Chinese authorities regarding the future of CPEC.

You do know Pakistan is in the mess it is, that needs emergency procedure to save it, precisely because it has been governed by very, very 'experianced' PML-N and PPP governments for last 30 years. If dire straits Pakistan is in at the present because of experiance can we please have some inexperiance, please!

And for what it's worth although the source is dubvious but there is probably some truth in this. I am firm believer in realpolitiks. No state can be run by being a saint. If for instance Pakistan really took on morality as guiding principle of foreign affairs we would end up annoying and making enemies of almost all the big powers. All we would have left is Maldives, Seychelles and vatican ....

  • USA ~ Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, support to Israel
  • Europe ~ support to Israel
  • China ~ repression of Uighur Muslims
  • Russia ~ the almost genocide of Chechens and destruction of the Emirate of Chechynia
  • Russia ~ repression of Daghestani Muslims
  • Egypt ~ recognition of Israel
  • Turkey ~ repression of Kurds
  • Saudia ~ treatment of Pakistani workers
  • UAE ~ treatment of Pakistan workers
  • Iran ~ repression of Sunni communities
  • Australia ~ genocide of Aborigines
  • India ~ you already know
  • Afghanistan ~ you already know
  • etc
  • etc
That is why governments have to rationalise their foreign policy based on self interest. However PTI did lose track of self interest with regards to China. First they were critical of CPEC, which is perfectly okay but it should have been done privately with the Chinese. Doing it publicly was blowing smoke up the Chinese nose and it gave fuel to it's enemies in America.

In addition PTI religious and minorities minister publicly complained about Uighur Muslims. That is a no, no. You want to annoy the Chinese dragon and have it spouting fire the perfect way is to raise the Uighur issue. Keep it up and you would have PLA divisions parked next to Sost border between Pak and China. Never mind CPEC or any help!

However I must stress this. Green a this government is because it is inexperianced at least it has it heart in the right place. I prefer this compared to the experiancec looters of PML-N and PPP. At least as we move forward PTI will gain experiance fast. But looters never give up looting.

He's trying to do too many things too early, should slow down a bit.

He left with nothing when he come into power. All money looted by PMLN and PPP. So country need too many things and in short interval of time.

Yes, good point. You get the feeling they are in a rush. 24/7. You can see it on IK's tired out face. I think here again the government has trapped itself in the 100 day pledge. This is a 200 million country that has been ruined by 30 years of PPP/PML-N looting. It's going to take time to fix. Slight slow down might actually be better.

Kaptaan sb,

This is a 200 million country that has been ruined by 30 years of PPP/PML-N looting.

With due respects, sir, of the last 30 years, 11 years belonged to Mushy and not the duo!

Look at some of the responses of these fool youth Lot, They think that China will be very happy for statements against CPEC by Imran Khan and his ministers.

Listen fools, Abdul Raqaq Doud dawood had to retract his statement against CPEC, and at the same day...

Come out of your fairy tales world, where everything is hunky dory...

They arent fools the real fool is you people like you are the people that never wanna see pakistan propser what are you doing on defence go sleep on the motorway nawaz built eat ur food of that aswell

Of course, you are right. I actually think Mushy did even more damage then PML-N and PPP but I excluded him for simplicity and some here hold him on a pedestal that requires you to bend your neck 90 degrees to see.

Mushy 'sold' Afghanistan for peanuts and gave Karachi to the gangster/mafia of MQM. And the only reason he justified his take over. Erasure of Nawaz failed miserably. He let hom go on rest/recuperation only to come back even stronger and loot for another 5 years !

more awkward
cringe.

.
IK badly need to learn diplomacy the main thing a politician must be good at. BTW i am amazed the seasoned politicians like Qureshi couldn't change IK and now Chinese govt has to go that too.

.
Naya Daur ??????????? what the ......... :hitwall: ....
this guy has clearly no idea about Pakistan's strategic importance, such type of fake news are always published through unknown websites

@Indus Pakistan

Kaptaan sb,

Mushy 'sold' Afghanistan for peanuts

Not sure what could Mushy have done after 9/11 given Amerikkka's mood. Many of my Pakistani friends do accuse him of deliberately allowing the TTP types to become big in Swat and elsewhere to create an "after me the deluge" kind of scenario in the eyes of the Western powers (to force them to bolster his regime). To what extent such an accusation is true, you guys would be better equipped to opine on.

On the economy side, my limited professional competence pertains to the field of energy and I think Mushy failed badly here. There was neither an overhaul of the T&D segment; and he failed to plan or implement any thermal or hydro generation capacities which showed up in large energy deficits which persisted till the recent plant building spree under MNS.

Regards

Imran Khan’s dance around donors

The way Imran Khan is dancing around donors shows that the government did not have an action plan coming into power and has still not been able to formulate one. It is just groping in the dark trying to delay the inevitable. It is not doing anybody any favours. At the end of the day it will only add to the people’s burdens.
Jahil patwaries.. As if China or any other country dont know Pak is a failed economy or not... Lol... Pak is failed economy because its led by lohaars and wadairaas of punjab and sindh.. You patwaries keep enjoying lohaar and wadairas rule.. We dont care about you as we know what low level of mind you have in your heads
