Import duty on eatable, luxury items raised by up to 50pc

Broadly statting duties are imposed on:

1. Imported Eatables
2. Cosmetics
3. Ceramics
4. Electronics
5. Sports products
6. Imported Vehicles

Point 2 to 6 hardly affects common person as they already can not afford them.

Point 1 shall have more affect on those who can afford it and not on common person as he perhaps already does not use many of the items listed on the imported food items.

Increase in duty on import of wheat, sugar cane, potatoes and vegetables can in a way have positive affect as local growers might benefit from it. This if handled properly may increase local production.

Good move by Vikas Purush MNS's govt.

Now even if tariffs were not increased, price rises were inevitable. Sooner or later the Govt of Pak would have been forced to devalue the PKR, which would have effectively increased prices of imported stuff for Pakistanis.

This is a good proactive step.

Also as ejaz sahib says this will improve prices for Pak industries and farmers.

then it would be better to import the wheat and grow tea, olives, rice, or any other cash crop. You can not have an agricultural economy with the agricultural product being too expensive to export, to expensive for local consumers, and still promote it.


They do if they have political backing which is mostly in Punjab and Sindh with the land lords. The middle class farmer gets screwed

Taxes both direct and indirect in both Pakistan and India are sky high. Government needs to increase the tax base considerably, ensure compliance, cut it's own useless expenditures and reduce tax rates considerable. No product should be taxed more than 10%.

ISLAMABAD: The government has imposed regulatory duty on import of 36 new products and raised its rates on the existing 240 items in a fresh move to curtail rising trade deficit of the country.

This step is just another way to build up a suitable posturing position in front of WB/IMF, that is all. The real match will come soon.
