IIT-Kanpur's indigenously built nano satellite 'Jugnu'

why should indians care if your 2nd,3rd tier universities produces nano satellites,the nano satellite produced by iit-kanpur is an achievement for india

it is not. it is wasteful to assign your best to projects like this. they should be treated better, for example, you tell me which is more important, nano satellite or real satellite.

because:

we don't have a first class R&D capacity. there is a HUGE gap between our R&D and the west. we have to copy a lot of stuff from the west to make sure we can catch up. we don't just pay them to wide the gap, we want to close the gap. we Chinese are more honest than indians, we acknowledge our backward status because that is the only way to catch up.

that being said, our R&D capacity is still 30 years ahead of india's. for example, satellite, we have our navigation satellite network Beidou which is already operational for most of the Asia and Pacific areas. Our IT sectors are also 10-15 years ahead.

Good to see this development. Changing weather patterns are something that need to be monitored and the 'Jugnu' can keep an eye on ground conditions.
Maybe India can extend the program to cover all S.E.Asia for a unfied coverage between India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

I found this funny: the time-capsule stores data for a thousand years but Jugnu's estimated life-span is one year.

Each subsystem is developed with the limitations of current know how and technology available. Some systems could outlive others but it is important to build a system that gives a minimum assured life and that is determined by the weakest sub systems. Also, the expected age or life of a satellite is based on a best guess estimate and on many occasions, systems outlive the expected life. Example the Hubble telescope.

they will get their experience in making real satellite but why compare chinese university with indian university,we are doing allright with satelites produced by the iit graduates

In China, our second tier universities are assigned tasks for the R&D of such nano satellites. for example, a 3.5kg nano satellite designed by Zhejiang university was successfully launched last year.

Again, as already widely observed, india report such "potential" achievement while Chinese only care about real achievement. that is the difference.

Your loud mouth doesn't match with facts on the ground. By posting the same crap in every thread about India, you make yourself a fool.

This thread is not about China and you seem to have nothing to contribute here.

Exhibition on innovations by IIT-Delhi on Saturday

New Delhi: Waterless urinals and fibre hinge joints for polio patients are among a number of innovation projects developed by the IIT Delhi which has filed for patents for 40 scientific inventions in the past one year, showcasing high standards in research.

The elite institute will exhibit the innovative projects on Saturday at its sixth annual open house -- I2Tech 2010.

"So far, IIT-Delhi has been granted with 61 patents of scientific inventions, while over 205 more applications have been filed. About 40 applications have been filed in the past one year only," its Director Prof Surendra Prasad told reporters here.



The annual open house is an attempt by the premier institution to demonstrate some of the most innovative and path-breaking projects to the public.

"Waterless urinals is a water conserving invention which can save between 50,000 to 1,00,000 litre of water per year. A polymeric coating to be applied on pans to prevent odour, microbial and fungal growth has been developed also," said Prof V M Acharya, under whose name the invention has been patented.

"What is most special about the technique is that it is reusable, can be retrofitted to any urinals, and also comes very cheap," Acharya said.

The other highlights of the event will include the display of the latest research projects like fibre hinge joints for polio patients, Gramin Radio Inter Networking System and Machine readable systems.

"The basic idea of the one-stop show is to create an interactive platform for the IIT-D fraternity, giving them an opportunity to showcase the best of their work to technology enthusiasts, students and colleagues from other technical institutes, industries and general public," Prasad said.

"Entering into the sixth year, I2Tech still promises to be a real treat to the eyes of the connoisseurs by presenting finest of the projects," he said.

The premier institute has also created a special centre -- Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) -- for marketing these innovations.

"Our students and faculty members themselves also contact with industries for the transfer of technology. We have launched FITT to sell the inventions by our staff and students," he said.

and named it GULSAR adn tried to sell it in sri lanka and then got sued

Can someone explain this ?

I guess the satellite will work for only a year or so taking data and images. But the storage device can preserve it for a 1000 years even when the sat has stopped working.

SRM TO LAUNCH MICRO SATELLITE WITH ISRO: A multi disciplinary research initiative involving faculty and students of Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Computer Science and Chemical engineering, to launch the satellite by 2010...
SRM University has plans to design and develop a micro/ nano satellite within the next couple of years with ISRO," said Mr Narayan Rao, the university's Director of Research, at the Small Satellite Project meeting held at Kattankulathur recently.
The whole engineering faculty, and specifically, the Departments of Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering will play a major role in achieving this goal. "It will provide exciting and challenging opportunities for the students," he added.
Dr. D.A.V. Murthy, Project Director for Satellites - ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), explained that ISRO in collaboration with SRM University would send up either a micro- or nano-satellite into space with a specific payload in mind. Stressing the fact that the students were the main think tank behind the project, he said all the Departments would have to work together in cohesion to meet the deadline of SRM University being able to launch a satellite by 2010.
With the help of a slide show presentation, Dr. Murthy explained the past achievements of ISRO, and what it plans to do in the near future. He went on to enumerate the basic features of a satellite, what it would take to design and structure one, what would be its various uses to society.
