1 Type of Firearm for Multiple Scenarios. Which one will it be?

the_book_of_eli.jpg

Basically Society has collapsed, there is civil unrest, dangerous armed gangs, there is no food available so and there are alot of desperate people. You have to be able to protect your self from humans, large animals, and you have to be able to hunt. In addition you are carrying food, water, and other equipment that you need in order to survive. Unfortunately you can only choose 1 type of firearm for this scenario. Which type will it be?

Some things to consider:
  • How much ammo can you carry?
  • Can you hunt with the weapon you choose?
  • Can you protect yourself with the weapon you choose?
  • How far do you need to be able shoot?
  • Do you need to keep a low profile?

We are not comparing specific weapons rather we are discussing and comparing the types of weapons that best suit the given scenario.

@Emmie @Manticore @Aeronaut @WebMaster Can you move this to the guns corner? I think it would be better to get more people involved.

For an Urban scenario, an Assault Rifle (my choice). For a non-Urban scenario, a Battle Rifle.

Optimally with a silencer and a scope. :D

A semi-automatic Sniper rifle would be good, but difficult to rely on in a scenario where attackers may creep up on you at close range. Bolt action sniper rifles are even worse in this scenario, and since "you can only pick one", any slow-firing weapon is not ideal.

Shotguns are great, but you never know when you come across a scenario when you just really need that extra range and accuracy. You could get slug ammunition for long-range shots, but then again an Assault Rifle is still superior at range, with a larger magazine size.

Large Caliber Revolvers seem really nice at first glance, they are powerful and accurate at long range, if you have a scope they could function as a semi-sniper rifle. However they have very little ammunition (6 rounds, or only 5 rounds in the case of the 500 Magnum), and are relatively harder to control. Once you are out of ammo, even with a speed loader it is difficult to reload, and this will be the difference between life and death.

An Assault Rifle has similar power, greater penetration, greater control, and significantly better ammunition capacity. In a survival scenario, you really want a weapon with a decent magazine size, and the flexibility to adapt to all situations, which is where Assault Rifles and Battle Rifles really shine. Light Machine guns would have greater magazine size, but are too unwieldy compared to a good Assault Rifle.

Just my opinion.

Im divided between the Semi Auto Pistol 9mm+ and the .22LR Semi Auto Rifle.

With the .22lr I can defend myself, carry several thousand rounds of ammunition, I can hunt large and small game but I cant conceal it in an urban environment.

With the 9mm I can conceal it, I can carry a relatively large amount of ammo, I can still defend my self, and I can take out larger game maybe even smaller game if I am close enough.

Basically this decision about which fire arm type to select comes down to your survival strategy.

@A1Kaid Which would you choose out of those I listed?

Edit: Never mind I thought you were discussing in real life, didn't realize you were talking about a set-up scenario.

I would get a .22lr semi-auto rifle if I had the choose between the two. Though I like neither.

I would take a battle rifle in this scenario. HK417 or a Colt LE901.

To survive given scenario one guy with one type is simply not enough or you must be THE Rambo :D
To make it through it must be a team work
Minimum 4 - max 6 guys team with one medic.

No matter what is your weapon choice you have to choose the weapons that your oppents are using so you can refill yourself on the way out.

One thing is sure you are going to need alot of stopping power. So AK is ideal choice with silent sidearms.

And finally its not surving its fighting Armageddon :D

If i'm in the americas m-16.In eurasia kalashnikov.

Your scenario also has terrain as one of the concerns.
For standard patrol/hunting foraging
For Urban Terrain, I would prefer a Side folder AK, with at-least 300 rounds of ammo,
For Countryside Mountainous/plateau , (Elk/Deer Country) Would prefer a FAL Imbel or PTR91 with 200 rounds
For Countryside Prairie flatland, (small game terrain), Tar 21 Tavor or Bushmaster ACR or Daniel Def AR15, 400 Rounds.
Witha all of the above you can defend yourself, 5.56 nato can be used for hunting Medium size game to if you know how to use it as well as it will work for small game like rabbit, squirell etc. But 7.62x51 will restrict you to medium and large game, small game is obliterated by the round.

For Perimeter defense
Any of the above will do.

AK and AR can be used in any of the situations, Handguns are only useful for personal defense, nothing more than that.

the most important thing to remember is to do a lot of cardio, when stuff goes south doesn't matter what you are packing you need to be able to get out of dodge.

For rural environment,

FN SCAR-H PR

For urban environment,

MP7A1

I believe the AK can help me almost anywhere!Although I won't mind an AR.....12 guage(although has limited range) would give a wide choice of rounds!

What if you get injured and you cant wield a large weapon? What if you need to avoid attention?
