Disaster Relief Support to Myanmar in response to Flood Emergency
August 06, 2015

12 Regions and States of Myanmar have been severely affected by Cyclone Komen, which has led to widespread floods and landslides in that country. Around 250,000 people have been affected and over 500,000 acres of farmland destroyed. On July 31, President of Myanmar declared Chin and Rakhine States and Magway and Sagaing Regions as "natural disaster zones" requiring emergency assistance.

On August 4, 2015, Government of Myanmar welcomed international assistance for the flood response. Government of India was specifically requested to send emergency supplies of rice and medicines by air to locations that are currently hard to reach through other means.

In response, Government of India has dispatched emergency relief supplies to Myanmar. Indian Air Force aircraft are in the process of delivering supplies to Kalay and Mandalay and are ready to supply other affected areas as advised by the Myanmar authorities. The operation is being conducted by Ministry of External Affairs in close coordination with Government of Myanmar, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence, the Indian Air Force, the Embassy of India, Yangon and the Consulate of India in Mandalay. The operation will be completed in the next 2-3 days.

Embassy of India, Yangon remains in close touch with the Myanmar authorities and international organizations in this connection.

India greatly values its special relationship with Myanmar and will stand by the Myanmar people in this hour of crisis.

India airlifts food, medicines to flood-hit Myanmar
NEW DELHI: India on Thursday swiftly air-lifted around 100 tonnes of food, rice, noodles and medicines for flood-hit Myanmar on its C-130J Super Hercules and C-17 Globemaster-III aircraft, in keeping with the fast-expanding bilateral ties between the two countries.

Defence ministry officials said one C-17 strategic airlift aircraft delivered 48 tonnes of relief supplies to Mandalay in Myanmar in the morning, while another airlifted about 45 tonnes to Guwahati. "Moreover, one C-130J aircraft landed in Kalay (Myanmar) with a 10-tonne load at around 1 pm," said an official.

"Over the next 24 hours, the C-130J will ferry the load delivered at Guwahati by the C-17 to Myanmar," he added. The C-130J aircraft, which can even land at short runways, is being used since the small airfields at Kalay, which is around an hour's flying time from Guwahati, and Sittwe in Myanamar cannot operate night landings.

The relief operations for Myanmar come shortly after the country's military commander-in-chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing visited India last month. India is keen to conduct intensive coordinated military patrolling with Myanmar along their porous 1,643-km land border, even as New Delhi steps-up military aid and training to Naypyidaw.
