IAF seeks 21 MiG-29, 12 Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighters to boost squadron strength

NEW DELHI: In an apparent effort to boost its dwindling fighter squadron strength, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is pushing a proposal to acquire 33 new combat aircraft including 21 MiG-29s and 12 Sukhoi 30s.

A proposal in this regard by the IAF is likely to be taken up before a high-level meeting of the Defence Ministry in the next few weeks, government sources told ANI. The 12 Su-30 MKIs are being planned to be inducted for replacing the number of aircraft lost by the Air Force in different accidents, they said.

The 12 additional Sukhois will help the Indian Air Force to maintain its fleet of 272 Su-30MKI fighters. India had placed orders for 272 Su-30 fighter jets over a period of 10-15 years in different batches and senior officers feel that the number of planes acquired so far would be enough for the service's heavy-weight aircraft requirement.


The 21 MiG 29s that the Indian Air Force is planning to acquire are from Russia which has offered to sell these planes to help the Air Force to meet its requirement of new fighters. "As per plans, the MiG-29s on offer would be of the latest upgraded MiG-29s which are already in service with the IAF. The radars and other equipment on the planes would also be of the latest standards," the sources said.

The negotiations for the MiG-29s are at an advanced stage and the IAF is hoping to finalise the deal at the earliest possible, they said. The Indian Air Force had carried out a study to check if the airframes of the MiG-29s on offer were good enough for it to operate for a long time.

MiG-29s are flown by the Air Force and the pilots are familiar with it but the ones offered by the Russians are different from the ones in the Indian inventory.

The Indian Navy also operates the MiG-29 'K' and is the only operator of this version of the plane and is having a rough experience with the planes which are difficult to maintain and their settings change immediately after they land on the aircraft carrier.

The Air Force has three squadrons of the MiG-29s which have been undergoing upgrades for extended life and are considered to be very good planes in the air defence roles.

Confusing. When your inducting Rafales and eventually lca. But still want more mig 29s, i understand you can manufacture more su 30s, but you have to import mig 29s directly from Russia. Then your looking for another single engine platform from abroad. Have i missed something?

Well it's 100% indigenous and state of the art next gen fighter. It's so high tech that it ain't need serial production because it would be an overkill for current PAF fleet of 3rd Gen modified J7 and tagged JF17 fighter. They could meanwhile employ mig21 bisons superior to anything PAF may ever have. Probably Tejas mk6 tranche would be tested by 2050 and inducted FOC in 2070 at its completion of Hundred years of R&D ceremony

I spotted that too, they are replacing their combat losses, that is why !!!!! If the final number was always 272, then with the known crashes, we know what PAF AMRAAMs did to the IAF and the IAF has got the bee in their bonet over the AMRAAMs..

btw.. This is the first OFFICIAL confirmation of Su30MKI losses by India that are, for reasons "other than technical".

i think the other one also disinegrated with an AMRAAM up its arse aswell, and PAF is being generous in allowing IAF to hide its blushes in the name of "peace".

IAF got wacked that night, so much that it ran the other way. 1 MKI shoot down may have that effect, but 2 MKI's + 1 Mig21 will have that effect... that would explain all the MKI's going "bingo" on fuel that night.

What's there to miss? A lot of legacy birds are about to decommissioned. There is a sqd requirement that IAF has to fill. LCA production will take time for it to roll. MMCRA2 bird's production to start will take a lot of time. So getting some MIG29 and uprating them to UPG isnt all that bad.
