IAF needs 39 squadrons for 2-front war, has only 34'

we are about to get 6 sqd Rafale + 5 sq MKI + 5(probably) LCA.... and mostly 80-100 PAK-FA or FGFA in 2027-2030

which makes 6+5+5+4 or 5.... did i miss any thing? please notify me if i am wrong...

To be added by 2027-30:

8-9 SQDs of Rafale (I expect 200+ Rafales for sure)

6-7 SQDs of MKI

2 SQDs of LCA MK.1

5-7 SQDs of LCA MK.2

5-6 SQDs of FGFA (of 9-10 SQD order)

So 26-31 SQDs to be added by 2027-30. Let's not count any possible AMCA orders right now. With 21 SQDs being phased out. Which gives ~45 SQDs all said by 2027-30.

No.7 SQD "Battle Axes"
No. 1 SQD "The Tigers"


Indeed I am 2027-30 to get to 50 fighter SQDs is very achievable.

The question is will they able to do it?? Never ending nego which take almost 9 year or 12 year for a 12 -14 heli??? :angry:

In next 4 years out of 12 mig 21 sqdns, only 4 Bis sqdns will survive, that means a deficit of of 8 sqdns, in the same four years two sqdns of MKI will roll out from HAL, and one sqdn of rafale from Dassault, in addition to that another sqdn of LCA MK1 is expected.

In next four years IAF will probably loose 8 sqdns (Gen 2 fighters) and add 4 sqdns of Gen 4.5 fighters.

If I remember correctly, plan is to replace different single role (Mig 21/27, jaguar etc) fighters with multirole ones. As one aircraft covers the role of 2 others, number required goes down. Is it correct?

It is, aircrafts have evolved into better multirole platforms, MKI can alone perform all the roles of a mig 25, mig 29, jaguar and Mig 27 in a single mission.

Mig21 and mig 27 roles will be replace in two tiers by Rafale and LCA mk2 (Hopefully), Jaguar still have some life, eventually Jaguar, mirage and Mig 29 roles will be jointly taken over by MKI, PMF/FGFA and PakFA

But the number would need to increase as the neighborhood has become more hostile, unstable and increasingly pro-war.

I have always maintained the lynch pin of IAF doctrine rests on LCA MK2 and further developments. If LCA can be produced in the range of 20-25 sqnds taking care of all of the CAP and area defence missions, then all Strike platforms like rafale, jags, m2k's, Mig 29's, MKI's can be utilized for it's true intended offensive purposes.

Sir, the IAF will only be getting FGFA, not PAK-FAs.

That is some target! 400+ LCA!

I have just checked the numbers of 4th generation aircrafts in the Indian inventory, let's just say it's smaller than the Chinese one. in a war which both won't use all of it, I think since Delhi is closer to the border India may have the the numbers advantage.

However China can still hold the vast majority of Indian inventory while the Pakistan army pretty much has free reign on Indian land.

So this scenario is stupid. You can't engage both at the same time, you need most of your available inventory to just engage with China, and what's left will not be enough for Pakistan.

If you try to defend against both equally then you will get overran everywhere which is worse.

So, in order to have a chance at defeating China, Pakistan must not be involved in any war.

Are you sure about 5-6 SQD of LCA mk2?

With current squadrons we cannot defend from both China and Pak
