JODHPUR: In yet another crash involving an IAF aircraft, a MiG-27 caught fire on mid-air before falling in a field at Jaitpur village in Pali district on Wednesday. The pilot, Ft Lt A Patni, however, ejected safely.
According to defence PRO, Lt Col N N Joshi, the aircraft was on its routine training sortie and crashed at 1320 hrs, 60 km south of Jodhpur just 15 minutes after it got air borne from Jodhpur air base. A court of inquiry has been ordered to look into reasons behind the accident, he said.
"We saw a plane coming down engulfed in fire and it fell in a field over a herd of sheep," said sarpanch of the village, Arjun Singh. He said there was panic among the villagers for a while as all were fearing explosion. "But once the fire died down, villagers reached the site," he said.
Of the eight air crashes recorded by the IAF this year, this was the fourth MiG-27 crash this year. The first MiG-27 crashed at Hashimara in West Bengal on February 16, the second on June 23 again at Hashimara and the third on September 24 at Kalaikunda in West Bengal. Apart from the MiG-27s, the IAF also lost two MiG-21 variants this year, one at Bagdogra on February 19 and the other in Halwara in Punjab on June 15.
The MiG-27 is a 'swing wing' aircraft and the over 100 of them in IAF combat fleet were hardly flown since 2005-2006 after it was found that their R-29 engines were causing a large number of accidents.
