An unidentified balloon-shaped object picked up by the Indian Air Force’s radar was intercepted and shot down on Tuesday. (ANI)

An unidentified balloon-shaped object picked up by the Indian Air Force’s radar was intercepted and shot down over Barmer on Tuesday even as Republic Day celebrations continued amid an unprecedented security blanket in Delhi.

“An IAF fighter was launched which intercepted the object and brought it down. Further investigation is on,” an IAF official said on condition of anonymity. The incident was reported between 10.30am and 11am, he said.

An IAF team was sent to the site in Gugdi shortly after the incident.

Meanwhile, panic gripped villages in the district after the loud explosion was heard in the afternoon.

The villagers living in Gugri and Panawara villages claimed that the explosion was so loud that cracks developed in some of the houses in the villages.

“The explosion was loud... and we saw some objects falling from the sky... my house has developed cracks,” said Manohar Singh, a resident of Gugri village.

A police team was rushed to these villages, which found cone-shaped metallic objects.

“We are in touch with the IAF officials and are sending them the pieces for further analysis,” a statement issued by Barmer police said.

News agency PTI quoted a defence source as saying the object could be a meteorological balloon.

Another official said the force was on high alert on the 67th Republic Day and the object was flying in from the western sector.

Earlier, an ANI report said an IAF jet accidentally dropped five bombs in Barmer, resulting in an explosion.

Bizzare blunder: India’s fighter jet accidentally drops 5 bombs in Rajasthan
Delhi is the world‘s most polluted capital and levels of PM2.5 – the tiny particles that can enter the bloodstream – frequently reach 10 times the World Health Organization s safe limit.

Seems odd for a plane to be casually carrying bombs...maybe they were fuel drop tanks.

In a bizarre incident, a fighter jet accidental dropped five bombs over Gugdi town in Rajasthan’s Barmer district on Tuesday. The sound of the explosion was heard in a 10 km radius. No casualties have been reported as of now. Initial reports suggested that the bombs were slipped out of the fighter jet which was on a sorties over the area. Meanwhile, a team of Indian Air Force (IAF) left for the site where five bombs dropped from a fighter plane over Gugdi. An inquiry has been ordered to probe the blunder made by IAF jet. More details are awaited. Fortunately, bombs were dropped over an isolated place otherwise it could have caused huge devastation

How's that even related ?

An estimated 10,000 spectators braved thick smog and air quality levels classified as hazardous on the US embassy website to watch the display.

Delhi is the world‘s most polluted capital and levels of PM2.5 – the tiny particles that can enter the bloodstream – frequently reach 10 times the World Health Organization s safe limit.

But the skies remained dry, unlike last year when chief guest US President Barack Obama was forced to shelter under an umbrella throughout.

Stupidity at it best.
It was not a bomb ,but sonic boom created by Su 30 MKI when it entered supersonic flight .We knows such sonic boom send shock waves and will damage structures .
Second fact is that Su shot down that thing using its main gun and Air Force officials got that from that village .:D
