I can answer questions about China and help you understand our country

So I think I’m quite qualified as someone who lives the great ol’ United States. To clarify, I was born here, thrown to China in my toddler years before returning here for my education.

So why am I so defensive about China?

Because America has a lot of propaganda, and I mean a lot.

I’m an incoming ninth grader, and I wasn’t really into politics until eighth grade, odd, but I loved seeing all the different sides. I get these articles in my Social Studies class, and they’re all on current issues and yada yada. Most of them have accurate and interesting news, but eventually I realized that there was a lot about China. More specifically, about how China was recording all their civilian’s data, about how there’s cameras everywhere, how they banned Winnie the Pooh because the president is such a dictator.

This wasn’t just the article, my teacher was speaking the same thing as the articles, about how it’s a dictatorship and how freedom of speech is limited. My view of China deteriorated, and my feelings about being Chinese did too, I didn’t want to be associated with this “bad race”.

I suddenly had this moment of realization, this moment where I broke through brainwashing and went, holy shit, this is such bullshit. I somehow forgot the fact that I’ve been to China, I’ve literally witnessed how life is there, both in the city and out.

There was no constant surveillance, cameras aren’t exclusive to China, America has them everywhere as well. China recording your data? Did we all just decide to forget about who Edward Snowden is?

The more I read about these made up things about China, the more I felt defensive. People I’ve met there are all normal people, there wasn’t this huge communist pride bullshit that America made people believe, people were just regular people going on with their days. They are literally the same as anywhere America, the only exception being that they’re mostly Asian.

I was thinking about the Uyghurs too, I remember passing white people, Muslims, I don’t remember any black people, but they were treated like any other. People just passed them, perhaps they did a double take, but there was no hatred.

I have mixed feelings about the re-education camps yes, mostly because I have no definite opinion on the topic until I see an unedited clip of what happens in there. I enjoy the whole idea of it far more than slaughtering them, or simply imprisoning them like America has done to many different races and people.

I find people thinking Uyghurs are discriminated against in China sort of ironic. Especially with the hottest actress there right now being none other than:

An Uyghur.

As a Chinese person, what do you think about what the Western media say about China's government and the Chinese way of life? What's true and what's false in your opinion?
Good question. Above all, let me show you some pictures about the western media.

In a word, this is the truth manipulation of mainstream media in west. They totally post a lot of statements about China, which are pale sentences without evidences and proofs, accompanied with some fake, modified and irrelevant photos, intending to make lies come true. But in fact, some of the journalists have never been to China, not to mention that they know China a lot.
However, I would not say that every media is the same as above. It is my appreciation for those foreign personal media, for example youtube channels like Nathan Rich,Barret,Gweilo60, who are showing what the reality of China is. What they do are simply learning Chinese, talking with native, traveling around China and finally posting videos of their sights, which do show real life in China.
At last, here is a famous saying——Practice is the sole criterion for testing truth (实践是检验真理的唯一标准), which is a common faith of Chinese folks and government. And I hope those who are concerned about China would realize what it means.

As an eighth grader, you sure write a lot. :)

. . . .
I was born in mainland China, where I completed my education from primary school to university, and now live mainly in Hong Kong, having also travelled to dozens of countries around the world, including Europe and America.
My feeling is that the Western media's coverage of China is basically not credible. Even reports like those of the BBC, CNN, etc. To summarise, there are several reasons for this.
1. Racism. On the surface, the Western media are trying their best to avoid the so-called racism, but in fact, racism is deep-rooted in the West. This is something that I believe anyone who has been to a Western country will have experienced.
In April 2013, the TV anchorwoman Ada Niza produced a programme claiming that the Chinese restaurant's goulash was made from the flesh of dead Chinese people, among other things.
On the night of 31 December 2013, a Spanish-dressed Chinese runner was vilified in a sketch on TV5. The Chinese runner had an eccentric, demented and exaggerated expression, and his actions were cheap, frivolous and nonsensical, such as shrugging his shoulders, greeting customers at the waist, slapping the buttocks of female customers, putting up his orchid finger in front of customers, jumping up and down on chairs, imitating duck calls and cat calls, etc. Twice during the performance, other characters openly shout "Este Chino es Gilipolla" at the Chinese runner.
2. Ideology, because of the decades-long confrontation between East and West, in the West, the negation of the Communist Party has become so-called political correctness, which means that one cannot say anything good about the Communist Party. There is no light in areas ruled by the Communist Party, only darkness.
3. Cultural differences between East and West, even before 1949, when the CCP was not in power, the media in the West still discriminated against China. For example, many people really thought that all Chinese people ate dog meat, and after many explanations they would say with conviction that they believed you and so on. It was as if every one of us Chinese was a killer who specialized in killing dogs.
Did you know that the precept of Taoism, China's indigenous religion, is not to eat dog meat?
Fu Manchu (English: Dr. Fu Manchu) is a fictional character in the Fu Manchu series of novels by the British speculative fiction writer Sax Rohmer, who first appeared in 1913 in The Mystery of Dr. Fu Manchu. His iconic beard is known as the 'Fu Manchu moustache'. It has become one of the archetypes of evil genius in entertainment culture.
main-qimg-89c909a4bb2b08e224dd68cf54ecb61e

Let us now look at the various means used by the Western media to distort it.
main-qimg-74e83b17471186debeaff69ee7745cac

Here is a picture of a man supposedly blocking a tanker in 89, used to accuse the Chinese army of employing tanks to suppress civilians.
So the full video is here

As you can see, the tank is constantly trying to avoid the man, rather than pressing straight on. This video just proves that the Chinese army is trying very hard to avoid harming civilians.
Radio London presenter Majid Nawaz posted a video on social media claiming it was evidence of "racial persecution" in Xinjiang, China. He has been spreading the rumour through his radio programme, collecting signatures to demand a discussion on the issue in the British Parliament and threatening the British government with sanctions against Xinjiang.
main-qimg-18499624e226182dd10cf9c311f0f51f

In August 2017, a mega illegal pyramid scheme was busted in Bijie, Guizhou Province, with over 400 police officers escorting 100 suspects to identify the scene. There is not a single connection between the time place people and Xinjiang.
The Guardian, a mainstream British newspaper, has published a smear campaign against China, claiming that clothing made in China involves forced labour of Uighurs in Xinjiang and calling on all clothing brands and retailers around the world to boycott Chinese products. The article, which was sponsored by human rights organisation Humanity United, sought to discredit China's Xinjiang policy by replacing images publicly published in the Chinese media.
main-qimg-1b2a6a5abe30414a2f1408fb360134d1

See the CCTV logo in there? If the video was really of a concentration camp, would Chinese CCTV have released it?
This takes a Chinese media release video, edits it, and then turns it into so-called evidence.
A so-called "exclusive investigation" by the New York Times described the organisation of young people from poor rural areas to work in factories in big cities across Xinjiang during the epidemic as "forced labour trafficking".
main-qimg-541d88b42ef3cc888558285e9b4bb0d2

main-qimg-735ed6548ede6e951daefe16417280e9

The majority of the videos in the so-called documentary were downloaded from recent Xinjiang TV news programmes, including footage of production in mask factories.

On 22 December 2019, Peter Humphrey, a former British journalist, published an article in The Times about a six-year-old girl from London, UK, who found inscriptions in a Christmas card purchased from Tesco, the UK's largest retailer, stating, "We are foreign prisoners in Qingpu prison in Shanghai and are forced into forced labour. Please help us by notifying human rights organisations and contacting Han Feilong".

One of the first media interviews with the "prison" company mentioned in the article revealed that it was a highly open printing company that did not appear to have any strict security measures in place.

In April 2008, CNN host Cafferty made insulting remarks on the San Francisco Olympic Torch Relay's Current Affairs Review, saying that "Chinese products are rubbish" and that "the Chinese have basically been a bunch of thugs and gangsters for the last 50 years".

There are so many similar things that someone has even summarized the pattern of the Western media when reporting on China.

1. If they find something that China is doing very well, the Western media will give up reporting it and remain silent

2. If they find that China is doing something bad, the Western media will report a lot on these bad points.

3. If no evidence can be found of China doing badly, the Western media will download and then edit the videos and pictures of the normal Chinese media reports and put them together with completely different content.

4. If they find something bad in the world and it may involve Asian faces, they are the first to smear the Chinese (for example, in the case of the London big van stowaways, CNN was the first to attack China, but it turned out to be Vietnamese)

5. Where Chinese cultural practices are concerned, it is important to find out what is bad and what meat the Chinese eat, either dog meat or rat meat or even human meat.

6. Whenever there is a dispute between China and another country, the Western media reports it must be on the side of the other country. Any conflict is always China's fault.

7. Even as long as they are Chinese, they are all bad people, even the anti-Chinese elements. Examples include former US Secretary Zhao Xiaolan and former US Ambassador to China Gary Locke. These two are actually anti-Chinese and a bunch of Chinese people are calling them out, but just because they are Chinese, they still end up being reported as pro-Chinese communists by the US media.

So, do you still think you can trust the Western media?

I'll add one more piece of evidence of the Western media smear campaign. I'm sure many of you have seen this image

main-qimg-5d0ed0e6fcfaccffaf996e6f654d917e

It looks like a stolen photo, doesn't it? It proves that China is detaining Uighurs on a large scale, right?

I'm sorry, but this image is from a WeChat article by the Xinjiang Judicial Department, and the icon in the bottom right corner is the watermark of the article.

main-qimg-e46676940f03e0bcbc053f1a93d8b081

The original photo looks like this

Do you think the Chinese government would be stupid enough to publish photos of "concentration camps" themselves?

Look carefully at the Chinese characters in the bottom right corner. Interestingly, the western media have removed these characters online, resulting in a part of the picture being missing.

I think the Western media know very well that the Chinese government would not be stupid enough to publish photos of the "concentration camps" themselves.

Removing the Chinese characters for Xinjiang justice means that the photos can be pretended to be stolen, right?

answer is simple...just like Pakistanis become more patriotic and defensive about Pakistan when living in the west...the reason is that they along with the Chinese expatriates experience the sheer hatred, racism and ugliness of the western civilization has for basically anything and anytime NOT anglo-saxon...hence we wake up to the harsh reality and become more defensive & patriotic towards our respective home countries out of our thankfulness that we have a home country to be free in.

Hello @MH.Yang and thank you for opening this thread.
I would like to know what are the views of average Chinese on liberal democracy and since so many Chinese have lived in West, do they try to bring back their culture or values in China?
Thanks

We recognize the USA as a free country, but we do not recognize the USA as a democratic country. I have already mentioned the reason in the previous post.
Having the right to vote does not mean that it is a democratic country (in fact, the Chinese also have the right to vote. We vote for deputies to the National People's Congress, and the National People's Congress vote for deputies to the Top7).
True democracy is that the people control capital through the government, and the USA is that capital controls the people through the government. That's not democracy, that's cyberpunk.

The government is only a tool for the ruler to rule. Whether the ruler is the people or not is the only factor that determines whether it is a democratic country. Is it true that Americans rule the USA? Or wall street?

As for the Chinese people's attitude towards American values, as you said just now, 200 million Chinese travel abroad every year, and all of them have returned home. In 2019, 660000 people in China went abroad to study. In the same year, 520000 people returned home after graduation.

Yes, the Chinese government does build a network wall, but the CCP government is not afraid of people going abroad. Can you think about why?

Once in a while you hear about somebody being rescued stuck in window bars...and sometimes they are up very very high.
View attachment 769189

Are the bars you see over windows/balconies mainly for:

1) prevention of being included in a large falling object liability handed to a building due to an incident. Although the spacing of the above bars isn't that narrow and they seem overly strong for that.
2) prevention of suicides
3) prevention of break-ins

As far as I know, this kind of anti-theft window is more used to prevent children than thieves.

That kind of protective fence was very popular in China 15 years ago, and is rarely seen now. Because of theft is very rarePerhaps (maybe it is because everyone uses the Internet to pay, there is no cash at home, so there are few burglaries in recent years) and the diversion of people and vehicles (cars enter the underground garage and are not allowed to enter the community) and a large number of high-rise apartments (18 to 32 floors), most Chinese now use large floor to ceiling windows.

Who the hell is this? Ada who...in 2013? What country? I can't find any Ada Niza.

This post sounds like something disjointed out of Quora.
In 2013, TV5, a private Spanish television station, recently broadcast a program that maliciously slandered the local Chinese restaurant, even suggesting that the Chinese restaurant used "human flesh" to cook, sparking a strong protest from the Spanish Chinese Food Association and the Chinese community.

Excellent Thread

My Question 1
With rise of China, its obvious that West will attack china directly and indirectly. Is there a debate internally in China about the need of global military/naval bases to protect Chinese and Chinese allies' interests?

As an example of the recent attack on Chinese engineers in Pakistan by Indian RAW and Afghan NDS,why doesn't China believe (or portray publicly) in militarily threatening its enemies? How long do you think you can have a peaceful rise before West "physically" blocking you? When will your hawks dominate your doves, if ever?

Q.2.
Soft power is very important, India's bollywood has an impact across the globe despite being much poor. Why is China not focused or deems unnecessary the need of a robust cinema and TV(news and entertainment) which can propagate Chinese softer image across the globe? I know China is doing it on small scale but its not proportionate to Chinese global position.

Regards

@MH.Yang it would be interesting if an actual Chinese person could taste what is called 'Chinese food' in Pakistan and give their opinion. I have interviewed lots of Chinese friends but have been unable to provide them a sample they could taste.

Also, if a Chinese member could start a thread where they start teaching the very basics of Chinese - simple hieroglyphs, how to pronounce them, what they mean, simple sentences, that would be great!
